2013 Defensive End/3-4 Outside Linebacker Rankings

The NFL game has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Shifting from an old school style of running the football and stopping the run to wide open aerial attacks where defenses focus on confusing and attacking the Quarterback. The game is becoming more about speed than power, but oddly enough, the players are getting bigger and stronger while also being much faster. The defensive end position has gone through similar changes. From run stoppers, to situational pass rushers, to players who play end on 1st and 2nd down only kick inside to rush as a DT on 3rd down, defensive edge players have many styles and schematic responsibilities.

My Defensive End-3-4 Outside Linebacker rankings are made up of 3 different lists. My top 4-3 DE's, 3-4 DE's, and 3-4 OLB's. There are some situations where players have a spot on multiple lists, Ziggy Ansah could actually have a spot on all 3, but I kept each player in the scheme that I believe they fit best. I also did not include any of the draft eligible defensive tackles in my rankings even though the majority of them could fit into a 3-4 scheme at defensive end.

    4-3 Defensive Ends

    1. Bjeorn Werner - 6'3 266 lbs Florida State

    2012 Statistics:
42 tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss, 13.0 sacks

    Pass rush:
Doesn't offer a wide variety of pass rush moves, focuses mainly on initial quickness and power. Uses hands well to disengage from lineman. Deceptively athletic with the ability to dip his shouler and bend around tackles.

    Run Defense:
Sets the edge well and is rarely caught out of position. Diagnoses and reacts very well to the ball and makes plays down the line or in the backfield. Is a physical and tough run defender at the point of attack. Plays with a natural strength power and leverage.

    Initial Quickness:
Has deceptive quickness, but lacks the explosiveness to consistently get around the edge to the QB. Shows good lateral quickness and moves down the line very well.

    Pursuit/Motor:
Has a non-stop motor. An excellent tackler who can make a big hit. Has decent foot speed and is an under-rated OLB prospect. Gives great effort in his backside pursuit.

    Forecast:
The highest "floor" of any DE available in the draft, but his "ceiling" is not quite as high as your typical top 20 DE prospect. Werner will be able to start immediately at either defensive end position in a 4-3 defense. Doesn't differ greatly from Ryan Kerrigan as an OLB prospect but it's not a perfect fit. NFL Comparison: Jared Allen DE Minnesota Vikings

    2. Ezekial "Ziggy" Ansah - 6'5 270 lbs BYU

    2012 Statistics:
62 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks

    Pass rush:
Raw. Relentless as a pass rusher. Has shown the ability to split double teams. Doesn't offer much in terms of dipping his shoulder and bending the corner. Pure power guy. Loses the technique battle when ...

While interior offensive lineman don't get as much "pub" as the higher profile Left Tackles, their impact on the success offense is paramount. Watching players like Andy Levitre and Louis Vasquez strike it rich on the open market shows just how much emphasis teams place along the interior. This year could see 2 offensive guards selected within the drafts first 20 picks and it has been argued that Alabama's Chance Warmack might be the drafts safest player. Here are my 2013 interior Offensive lineman rankins featuring Guard and Center prospects.

    2013 Interior Offensive Line Rankings

    1. Chance Warmack OG - 6'3 320 lbs Alabama

    Run Blocking:
Excellent technique to go along with brute strength. Does a very good job of getting into position and walling off defenders on quick hitters. Generates excellent push on drive blocks with a strong base and great feet.

    Pass Blocking:
Shows a strong hand punch to jolt and slow defenders. Excellent base, rarely caught off balance. Anchors extremely well against a bull rush. Very light on his feet.

    Mobility:
Blocks on the move and out in space very well. Smooth and deliberate while pulling, always in control. Gets outside on screen plays very quickly and gets downfield well.

    Initial Quickness: ...

After seeing some interesting things at the combine, NFL front offices are going to have to go back to film room and take a second and third look at quite a few prospects. Potential health hiccups, surgeries scheduled, disappointing measurables, and bad interviews will push some players down and even off some boards completely. Here is my latest crack at a 3 round mock with a few surprises........ ...

If QB is the most important position in football, then finding a tackle who can protect your QB is a strong contender for #2. This years draft offers 3 players who could hear their name called within the first 15 picks on draft day and plenty of depth behind it. Whether it is day 1 starters like Eric Fisher or Luke Joeckel, or athletic projects who may be a year away like Lane Johnson or Terron Armstead, the 2013 NFL Draft has a wealth of tackle talent on either side.

    2013 Offensive Tackle Rankings

    1. Eric Fisher - 6'7 306 lbs, Central Michigan

    Run Blocking:
Solid technique and has a nasty demeanor. Plays with good leverage to get movement as a drive blocker. Uses long arms well to get into defenders and establish position. Struggles when he loses the leverage battle.

    Pass Blocking:
Proto-type. Uses long arms well to keep pass rushers at bay, has great feet to kick out and handle the speed rush. Anchors well and shows surprising strength against the bull rush. Rarely off balance.

    Strength:
Displays good strength while anchoring and has an excellent hand punch to slow defenders. Shows good lower body strength on drive blocks. Rarely beaten once he gets his hands inside a defender.

    Mobility:
Great feet for the former TE. Shows a good ability to get outside and seal ...

The 2013 TE class could be the deepest and most talented in years. Featuring a blend of players with varying skill sets who can make an impact with whichever teams calls their number on draft day. Complete TE prospects like Tyler Eifert, Zach Ertz, and Gavin Escobar. Red zone threats like Levine Tuilolo and Joseph Fauria. Power TE's like Michael Williams and Dion Sims. Even H-back candidates like Vance McDonald and Jordan Reed. With the league always looking for mis-matches and players with unique skills, the 2013 TE class will be in high demand this coming April.

    2013 TE Rankings:

    1. Tyler Eifert - 6'6 255 lbs, Notre Dame

    2012 Statistics:
    50 Receptions, 685 yards, 13.70 ypr, 4 Td's.

    Hands:
Eifert has very consistent and strong hands. Does an excellent job securing the football and uses his body well to shield defenders. Will go up and get teh ball at its highest point.

    Speed:
Very good vertical speed for a TE. Is capable of lining up all over the field, and was the most consistent outside receiving threat for the Fighting Irish.

    Blocking:
Eifert is like the majority of college TE's, he needs to get stronger to become a more effective blocker. He has good technique and keeps his feet under him and can capably wall off defenders to seal the edge.

    Route Running:
Ran a variety of routes from a number of different spots at Notre Dame. Effective as an in-line TE, move TE, slot WR, and split out wide. ...
