Trade Tourney Round 1: Texecutioner vs Gamefarm

Tex vs Game; that's texas vs jersey for those keeping score. I'm posting this now to give these guys time to think about it, but voting is still going on in the other matchup (rudi vs slurpee). If you have not voted on that matchup, please do so before we close the polls!

The rules: I will post a scenario involving a team, and you will construct a trade to fill their need.

Voting should factor in the following:
    (1) The trade(s) benefits all parties
    (2) feasibility
    (3) quality of argument

    Lets begin

Scenario: You're the GM for the 49ers. New coach Jim Harbaugh comes to your office and expresses his concerns on the personnel on his offense. While he's happy with the O-line and backfield, he doesn't feel there is enough consistency, discipline and leadership at the WR positions. Crabtree, while talented, has displayed poor work ethic and route running. Josh Morgan is a #3 caliber WR forced to play #2. Ginn is at best a special teamer, and Ronald Johnson isn't ready to be contributor. Harbaugh wants veteran WR help. He asks you to make it happen... so make it happen

Well as the GM I consider Steve Smith as an option to trade for first, but since my team is going to need all of the picks we can keep to find a good QB, then I hold back on that because that is still more important.

So, we sign Plexico Burress to come in and be that big WR the team needs. His attitude has changed and he's taking football very seriously and I sit him down and get him to play a veteran's role of leadership on the team since he realizes what he lost like Vick did and he begins to mentor Crabtree and explain all of the mistakes he made as a young WR in the NFL and how he wasted his early years in Pittsburgh. Crabtree starts to take it all in and works hard to have his breakout season.

After that, I trade this next year's 2nd round pick and the following year's 3rd round pick and Tedd Ginn Jr. for Kevin Kolb.

So Kolb now has Burress, Crabtree, Vernon Davis, and Morgan all to throw to with Gore at RB still. As long as Crabtree has that fire lit he'll perform like that true #1 WR that he can be.

I think this improves this offense enough finally to win the division and this is a realistic scenario that could actually happen.

I thought long and hard about Steve Smith as well. Burress also came to mind.

However, I chose to go in another direction as well.
The 49ers send RB Anthony Dixon and a 4th round pick to the Green Bay Packers for WR Jordy Nelson and a 6th round pick.
Green Bay is looking for depth at RB with Ryan Grant injury last year and a pedestrian running game for the entire season. Dixon is a strong and powerful back that will fair admirably in the colder weather with his style of running. Will also be a great short yardage back for the Pack.
The 9ers will be going back to the west coast offense, and Jordy Nelson's athleticism makes him a great fit for this offensive scheme. The Packers are deep enough at WR with Jennings, the ageless Donald Driver, and James Jones, whose eager to become a starting WR for this team, to be able to afford to cut ties with Jordy.

Green Bay gets much needed depth and San Fran takes a lot of pressure off of Crabtree. Hopefully Kaepernick can get them the ball

    P.S - GO JERSEY!

So, I'm reading the scenario and while Kevin Kolb would be a nice pickup I don't see how he qualifies as veteran wide receiver help, although I do think that QB is a bigger issue for the 49ers. Also help me out here LA, are FA pickups part of the deal?

So, I'm torn here. Plaxico fits the scenario given better, Jordy Nelson isn't really a "veteran WR presence", but its not a trade. The whole Kolb thing seems like an irrelevant aside

On the other hand I like the Nelson pickup more for the team, but the trade listed seems both like it is overcomplicated and I also don't think Green Bay would want to do it with Donald Driver turning 36 this year.

So, Plaxico Burress fits the criteria given best, so I'll vote for that if LA says that FA pickups are part of it. The Kolb thing doesn't relate, and I don't think Nelson is a veteran presence or that the deal made sense for Green Bay. If FA's weren't supposed to be the main way you solved it I'll go with the Nelson Trade.

I actually noticed the same thing when I read Tex's post this morning, so I had 12 hours to stew and decide on a ruling. Because Burress didn't play for a team for a few years now, I'll make the exception this time and rule this is allowable in this case.

I'll put up a poll once these guys get in a rebuttal

How can free agents not be a part of this thing?? If they're not, then I don't see the point of this entire challenge. If we're going to question free agency or trades for that matter I'd say that trades would be thrown out of this before free agency since players in these fantasy trades wouldn't even be up for negotiation by half of these teams any way. At least players in free agency would realistically go to these teams if they had good offers on the table and that's a lot more realistic than saying well I'll trade so and so for some other star or quality player on another team that said team would possibly not even entertain trading.

Now let me address the Kevin Kolb thing. The question in this round was to improve this team and specifically by the WR core. Now, with this current team simply improving the WR core doesn't do a whole lot when the QB position is what's been holding this team down since Garcia left. I would have gone after Steve Smith via trade and brought in Burress, but doing that would have caused me to use picks that this team would "realistically" need either this season or for next season to trade up in the draft to get a better QB or to get a good veteran QB that could lead this team. Either way this team goes nowhere until this QB situation gets resolved and trading away all of their picks and only improving this WR core limits this team's drafting abilities when they already will be trading some sort of picks away to get a QB. They have to. So, bringing in Burress, you get that veteran who could probably still play pretty well and a guy that has probably learned about what a dumbass he was all of those years and he'll really put that in Crabtree's ear. I don't think anyone doubts that Crabtree could be a big time WR if he is dedicated and fully committed and has a veteran presence in his ear that he could respect that's won a SB and been through a lot. With Crabtree and Davis your WR core is already pretty good on paper. With Burress you have that big tall threat that's good for the RZ and can use his body on smaller DB's and wouldn't need to be "the guy" in the passing attack. Plus, Morgan would be a nice #3 WR. With all 4 of those weapons added with a good running game this team is ready to go offensively as long as they have a good QB to run it.

And Kevin Kolb is the best option out there in my opinion as far as bringing in a young QB. I thought about Mcnabb, but he is older and if Andy Reid felt like Kolb was the better option to go with out of Philly, when he let go of Mcnabb than I'm inclined to believe that Kolb would be a better option due to his age and his upside and potential he has shown.

Bottom line, you can't fix this offense until you bring in a capable passer and QB that can lead this team. You can upgrade the WR's all you want, but this team needs a QB and they'll have to trade assets to get one at this point. Trading away picks and other assets to bring in another WR makes it very difficult to trade for a QB either this year or next year, so getting a quality WR in free agency is the better way to go than making a trade to improve the WR core. You simply can't talk about improving this offense by addressing this WR core alone without thinking about how to keep assets for a capable QB that can make this improved WR core effective.

And for the rest of this exercise, you have to have free agency a part of this thing in everyone's round. That's the most realistic suggestion anyone could make about a player going to a certain team, because those players are guys that could go to those teams without any arguments about whether this or that team would let them go.

If you make this game simply with trades only, it's boring and it's to Madden like.

What has Jordy Nelson ever really proven?? I'd say that Nelson is right on par with Josh Morgan really. Maybe a little more potential to him, but he is what their 4th WR in GB? I don't see how Nelson really improves makes this a better passing attack. It's possible, but he hasn't proven that he's a legit player in this league that's capable of a 1,000 type of season.
