NFL: This time around, New Orleans Saints TE Jeremy Shockey not the invisible man - ESPN

Though Jeremy Shockey's been a member of two Superbowl teams now, he's excited to make the most out of this moment, after being an injured castaway with the Giants.

The Saints should either release or trade SHockey in the off season.

David Thomas can be just as effective for the Saints and he won't cost near as much money.

They usually run a two TE set.

I'm just saying with the money they're paying Shockey, they could probably get the same production with Thomas. Thomas is a freaking work horse and he's got better hands than Shockey does as well. Even if they're running a lot of two TE sets, they could still probably find a productive TE that could do well there. The Saints are better than anyone at plugging average types of guys and getting great results. They're paying Shock a lot of money that I just don't think they really need to.

Yep, that was a huge BB mistake. I was really happy to see Thomas end up in NE thinking that he'd be really good over there, but BB never would let him play. When he did, I saw Thomas make some great catches. The guy will come through if you throw him the ball and he's tough as nails. He was VY's biggest crutch at Texas man and bailed out VY a lot on quite a few bad passes where he adjusted to the ball and made the catch to move the chains in a lot of really close games at crucial moments. He's like a poor man's Owen Daniels.

I don't agree with this. I believe a big reason why Thomas put up some pretty good numbers for us this season is because Drew Brees just knows how to find his TE's. Go look at Billy Miller's receiving stats for the Saints the previous two years. Pretty impressive for a guy hardly anyone has heard of. Shockey is a great blocker for us, gives out team a spark of attitude on offense and can still be a deep threat down the field. Thomas is the lesser in all three facets.

That's exactly my point though Weston. Billy Miller was making plenty of plays in the passing game for the Saints as well. You're right about that. And guess what? Miller never did jack when he played for the Texans. Brees doesn't have to have some marquee all talent athletic TE to make the guy effective in that offense, so why pay a ton of money to one guy when you can get practically the same production out of other guys for less.

And Shockey's been overrated his entire career. I've said that for years. He had a great rookie season, but after that he hasn't been near as good as what he's been hyped up to be.

And David Thomas is not the lesser of all 3. Thomas just hasn't gotten his opportunity to really show what he could do in a full season. I'll tell you right now that he's a more reliable target than Shockey 7 days of the week and has much better hands. That's no question if you've watched both for as long as I have. I've seen Shockey drop a ton of balls throughout his career. I've hardly ever seen Thomas drop anything. And Thomas is tough as nails bro. He's never been a poor blocker.

Thomas is very similar to Celek actually. Celek reminded me of THomas last season and I said at the time that the Eagles needed to let go of SMith and roll with Celek and Celek had a great year. He's nothing flashy, but he just goes in there and makes the catches and moves the chains. Thomas is just like that as well. If Shockey didn't have the contract he did, then I wouldn't be saying this, but since he does I wouldn't spend all that money on a guy like Shockey when you don't have to.
