Grossman signs, to compete for backup slot

Report: Grossman to fight for Texans' backup job

Rex Grossman, the former first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Texans, the Houston Chronicle reported on its Web site.

Grossman is expected to compete with fellow free agent Dan Orlovsky along with Alex Brink as the primary backup to starter Matt Schaub.

If Grossman passes his physical, the University of Florida graduate will sign a one-year deal for the minimum $620,000, the Chronicle reported.

Good signing for the Texans. I'm glad to have Grossman as a back up or to compete to be the back up. I hope that he never gets into any games, but he'll be a decent back up player.

This really is a good signing given the lack of QB depth the Texans have.

lol i love how you say he'll be a decent backup, but you don't want him in games, kind of a contradiction

    Yeah, it sort of was.

I mean, I don't want him in any games. because he isn't starter material and that would mean that Schaub is out. But if Schaub has to go down for a few games, then I don't think it will be so bad to have Grossman for a few games. But hell, he still has to beat Orvlosky out for the #2 QB position, so it isn't any set that he'll even be in a position to see the field. I'm not sure that the Texans would carry 3 QB's on their roster at the start of the season. Someone will probably have to go.

I can think of worse backups to have, I mean, he was a starter with super bowl experience, though most of it wasn't his own doing. There are a lot of QBs that are backups in this league that you would choose Grossman over for sure.

Given your thoughts on the 2008 Detroit Lions, you think there's much competition?

Orlovsky was actually decent minus the endzone incident

Orlovsky was good last year. Not great, good. I still maintain that 0-16 was due to poor defense and blowing every lead possible, but that's a tale for another forum.

The backup for Houston may have to play a few games here and there. Schaub has had trouble staying healthy recently so the backup QB spot is a crucial one.
