Hey guys,
After a couple of posts I thought it might be time for a little introduction. The first thing you should know is that I'm from Belgium (Europe). There's no American Football culture here, so unfortunately I've never been able to play the game (a decent WLB or SS might have been lost here). Once a year the newspapers report in a very small article who has won the Superbowl, which artist performed at halftime and how many people watched it, that's about it.
I pretty much enjoy every sport, so in january 2006 when I had some spare time I decided to investigate why Football was so popular in the States. I mean; the sports history of the USA is one of the richest in the world, so if something is popular there, there must be a reason for it. Bear in mind; I didn't know ANYTHING (rules/positions/teams/players/...), so I started from square 1; Wikipedia.
After while I was able to understand the basics, I read the articles on nfl.com and si.com although names of which I never heard of kept popping up (Who is Joe Montana? What did this Lomardi guy do?). Wikipedia and Youtube provided the answers. I quickly became enamoured with the Green Bay Packers; a team coming of a 4-12 season, from a small town up North, with insane fans that have to wait 35 years if they want a season ticket, where the only star was an old, over-the-hill QB. The perfect underdog.
I watched all highlight videos of the week on nfl.com (first play I remember is Big Ben spinning around and still tackling a Colts defender after the Jerome Bettis goalline fumble). A couple of days later I bought a digital TV signal receiver which allowed me to follow the games (they start at 7 PM, 9.30 PM and 2-30 AM over here) and he first game I saw was Superbowl XL; Steelers vs Seahawks.
To cut a long story short; much has changed since that little amount of spare time I had in January 06. I learned a lot but there's still a long way to go, and that's why I enjoy passing by this forum![]()
