Preseason Rookie Watch Thread

This thread is observations about rookies in their first preseason.

i'll start with a few Pac-10 guys

Desean Jackson is playing great. Word has it that he was suppose to be almost exclusively special teams, and maybe occasional slot, but he might be playing himself into more regular season snaps if this keeps up.

Antoine Cason is pretty much as I have advertised thus far. He returned a pick 50+ yards this past game, and had a bunch of tackles and a huge 3rd down pass break up in the first game. I've been reading the local San Diego news, and they say he had a great camp and looks like he's got the upperhand now for the nickel spot.

Justin Forsett is playing really well, had about 50 yards in his first game, then blew up for 115 or so in his second game, in addition to a big punt return. It looks like he has positioned himself to make the team, and could be a Darren Sporles type of player.

Dixon had a big run in the last game

On the other side of the coin, it looks like JD Booty is going to have a hard time making the Vikings squad. Jackson and Frerotte are penciled in as 1 and 2, and Bollinger is outplaying Booty thus far. You have to be pretty sucky not to make the Vikings if you're a QB.

Josh Morgan has been getting a lot of praise from the 49ers and he had a 5 catch, 100+ yard, 1 touchdown game last night. He's out of Virginia Tech and might challenge for the #3 or #4 WR position on the team.

Vernon Gholston - Has had trouble absorbing the JETS D but looks to be a good as a pressure option.

Dustin Keller - Has been outstanding thus far. Seems to be capable of doing it all. Did the JETS finally get a TE worthy of a 1st rounder?

Dwight Lowery - Has been a big part of both our pre-season games. Hasn't yet broken into a starter spot but it can't be far off.

Erik Ainge - Seems to be the odd QB out. Hasn't looked bad but Ratliff has seems to have the 3rd spot. Not sure why he hasn't seen a pre-season game but will likely find some time.

Marcus Henry - Has looked good but has been overshadowed by Clowney's outstanding play. That with the early reports of Chansi Stuckey and Farve becoming good friend may have Henry buried 6th in the depth.

Nate Garner - Haven't really heard much?

Colt Brennan - Not a JET but looked great against us. There could be a QB controversy growing in Washington if he keps this up.

I'm not a homer. I just don't know as much about rookies on other teams, so I'll just tell you about rookies to watch in KC:
Brad Cottam - be on the look out for this guy as a potential late round fantasy sleeper. The Chiefs are gonna run a lot of 2-TE sets and expect this guy to become very, very involved. I wouldn't start him every week, but I think he could be good for 400-500 yards and 5 or 6 TDs, which is pretty good for a TE, especially a backup TE on your fantasy team.

Jamaal Charles - A good RB option if you're looking for yards, but not TDs. I expect him to see a good 10-15 touches a game, with a few of those touches being in the passing game. And he's going to extremely effective in his touches. LJ wears the D down and Charles is lightning fast and, by the way, tailor-made for Chan Gailey's zone offense, which is similar to Denver's zone blocking scheme.

yeah, I could definitely see him getting significant playing time on defense by mid season.. he's coming along nicely.

also, he's been lightning on returns... I can't believe the Bills have McGee, Parrish, and McKelvin... that's just plain scary.

I can't wait to watch JC this year for KC Chiefzilla. I hope they get him the ball a lot on pass plays. I saw them go to JC on two pass plays in his first pre season game which was a good sign. I read that Croyle and Herm said that he was the fastest player they had ever seen on a football field.

As for rookies that I've noticed, Matt Forte looked like he had a nice presence with the ball. The Bears weren't opening up a lot of big holes, but he looked like a pretty tough runner.

Chris Johnson looks like he is going to be one hell of a play maker for the Titans. The guy hits the hole like a bullet.

I liked what I saw of Mcfadden in his first game. He was hitting the hole and getting what was there instead of dancing around more like Bush likes to do.

Ray Rice definitely impressed me. He was ran the ball with a lot of power sort of like Jones Drew. I think he's going to help the Ravens out a lot this year. McGhee better hurry up and get back on the field.

Royal for the Broncos showed that he's got some pretty good hands. Now I can see why some of these Broncos members in here have been talking about him.

Saftey Kenny Phillips has looked good so far. Still early but he has shown flashes of greatness.
