Jones is Fined $25,000.00

Quote:
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton's pending appeal of a $15,000 fine for his criticism of game officials may have lost some momentum, because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been fined $25,000 by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the same offense.

Jones was fined last week after he criticized referee Ed Hochuli for his overall performance following Hochuli's gaffe in Week 2 against the San Diego Chargers.

"Maybe the answer is to tell people like that, 'Keep that whistle out of your mouth,'" Jones said on his weekly radio show. "My gut here is the emphasis is going to have to be taking officials like that and getting somebody else if they're going to be penalty prone."

Jones' $25,000 fine was a greater amount because owners are held to a higher standard. Steelers owner Dan Rooney was fined $25,000 last year for his criticism of game officials. Ironically, Jones and Rooney are strong internal supporters of Goodell.

"I stepped out of bounds," Jones told ESPN's Ed Werder on Sunday. "Roger [Goodell] is doing his job."

Payton was fined for criticizing officials Monday after the Saints' 34-32 loss last Sunday in Denver. Payton planned to appeal becau

oh Gag......I cannot believe I am going to say the following....

much like the tuck rule of the Pats/Raiders game of 2002.....good call...but a lousy rule.

I have always hated the gestapo-ish way players and coaches get fined for calling out the bad plays of the refs. This time maybe not so much, but a lot of times the Refs deserve the criticism.

questioning Authority is a GOOD thing.

anyway....jones has owned the team for like 20 years (?) and has never been fined, and he handled it well.... even saying that the commish is doing his Job....well done

I really didn't think much into this issue, but I'd have to say that this is a pretty good post.

I've thought alot about the issue and i'd have to say its a terrible post.

While refs should be criticized and held accountable for their mistakes it has to be done within reason and it has to be regulated. There are 53 players across 32 teams in this league and god only knows how many coaches and assistant coaches and front office execs. Thats ALOT of voices, ALOT of blogs, and ALOT of microphones. The players and coaches and office execs are also the people who hold the biggest favor with the most important critic of all................ the fans.

If you open this thing up for these people to openly criticize the refs whenever they feel its necessary it'll never end. It'd be one big, non-stop *****fest that NONE OF US wants to hear about. Referee criticism over every tiny missed call or mistake would dominate the media. You'd have entire football teams running around whining and complaining constantly like the NBA x5.

........ no thanks.

you are just saying that because you hate the Cowboys.....now taking a non-biased look at it.....

I agree that overloading the criticism could be a bit much, but fining someone for just mentioning the faults of some of these calls is like black ops censoring. The nfl likes to hide behind it's shield from ANY criticism. and honestly it makes them look worse for it sometimes.

Woah! Hold up there for a second slugger, read what Jerry Jones said again.

He wasn't making just a slight mentioning of Hochuli's faults here. He didn't just make a casual mention of the mistake, he ATTACKED Hochuli calling him penalty prone and suggested that he be replaced. He was talking about firing one of the best all around refs in the game, he CLEARLY stepped over the line here.

If he was just talking about the mistake and not advocating replacing one of the best refs in the game today, then I don't think he'd have been fined at all.

I agree 100%. If Jones is just making an honest to goodness criticism of the call, and not the man, this fine is not warranted.

I also agree that you can not take the fines down, because I feel that it will turn into the NBA, with players and coaches complaining at every turn. I don't want the NFL to turn into a whiners league like the NBA- that's one of the reasons why I rarely watch them.

I think you're missing the point here Phil. Azy wasn't saying that the coaches should be able to blast off like crazy about refs whenever they want, but when their are clearly horrible calls during games that sometimes determine games and the league wasn't doing anything about it then sometimes questioning authority becomes a must. Plus, he made a good point about Jones handling it well and not complaining about the fine and saying the the league was doing what it was supposed to do. I don't see how that qualifies as a terrible post.

It was a bad post because he suggested in it that the players and coaches who get fined for making these comments shouldn't get fined. Like he said he hates "the gestapo-ish way players and coaches get fined for calling out the bad plays of the refs."

The guy didn't criticize the call he attacked the referee himself. Had he just criticized the call or talked about it the way everybody else is in terms of how they correct these issues in the future he wouldn't have been fined and our Ronn Mexico would have received the "questioning of authority" he claims he desires. Hochuli's mistake isn't being taken lightly by anybody by any means, but theres no reason to personally attack one of the best refs in the league. Thats uncalled for and it deserves a fine. Otherwise we might as well just open the flood gates and let everybody talk about which refs should be fired for making a bad call in a game or missing a call.
