1983 Best draft for the Chicago Bears
Six of the 22 starters for the Bears during their 1985 SB run were found in this draft.
First round-Jimbo Covert T Pitt. Covert played in 111 games in 9 years with the Bears. First round-Willie Gault WR Tennessee. Gault played in 76 games over five seasons with the Bears and in spite of playing in a run-first offense, he managed 184 catches for 3650 yards and 27 TDs. That’s an amazing 19.8 yards per catch. Third round-Dave Duerson DB Notre Dame. In 102 games over seven seasons in Chicago, Duerson had 16 sacks and 18 interceptions. Fourth round-Tom Thayer C Notre Dame. Thayer played in 123 games over nine seasons in Chicago. Eighth round-Richard Dent DE Tennessee St. Dent played in 167 games over 11 seasons in Chicago and finished with 124.5 sacks. Eighth round-Mark Bortz G Iowa. Bortz played in 171 games in 12 seasons with the Bears.
