Even though the role of the tight end is being minimized in a lot of college offenses, a number of able tight ends are available in the draft. It's possible no tight end will be taken in the first round, but there likely will be a run on them early in the second.
Local lookout
The stock of Notre Dame tight end John Carlson has been on a roller-coaster ride. Carlson didn't perform well at the combine with a 4.88 40-yard dash and a 301/2-inch vertical jump. But at Notre Dame's pro day he salvaged his stock by running a 4.72 40 with a jump of 351/2 inches.
Bears needs
The Bears are set with Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen as their top two tight ends, but they lost John Gilmore in free agency and could use a third. If they take a tight end, it probably will be late in the draft. Based on consultation from NFL scouts and game-tape evaluation, here is how I rank the tight ends.
