News Moore Injury/Panthers get McCown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Determined to avoid injuries, Carolina Panthers coach John Fox decided not to play his starters in the final preseason game Thursday in Pittsburgh.

But Fox had backup quarterback Matt Moore still in the game late in the third quarter behind a suspect backup offensive line—until Moore was carted to the locker room after being hit in the legs and sacked by unblocked safety Anthony Smith.

While a team spokesman said Friday that tests showed no broken bones or damaged ligaments in Moore’s injured left leg, his uncertain status for the season opener on Sept. 7 at San Diego could change how the Panthers approach shedding 21 players by Saturday afternoon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Carolina Panthers got an experienced backup for starting quarterback Jake Delhomme on Friday when they acquired veteran Josh McCown from Miami for a 2009 late-round draft pick.

Delhomme, who is returning from ligament-replacement surgery in his right elbow, has recovered well and is scheduled to start the season opener at San Diego on Sept. 7. But behind him in the preseason were Matt Moore, who started the final three games last year as an undrafted rookie, and Brett Basanez, who has played in one NFL game.

The trade came one day after Moore injured his left leg in the final preseason game at Pittsburgh. Tests showed Moore did not break any bones or suffer ligament damage, and general manager Marty Hurney said the trade was not in response to the injury.

I hope Moore's injury isn't too bad, after last season, he's definitely one of my favorite players and I think he has a bright future in the league.
