CAR Lucas leaves field on cart after fight with WR Smith

Quote:
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Carolina Panthers cornerback Ken Lucas was carted off the field with an ice pack above his left eye Friday after a fight with teammate Steve Smith.

The melee came while most starters were on the sidelines during a special teams drill at training camp. It was unclear what provoked the fight. Several players and coach John Fox rushed to both players. Fox tried to separate the two, but it took linebacker Jon Beason to pull Smith off Lucas.

Lucas walked to a tent, holding his head while accompanied by a trainer. Smith was then escorted there by receiver Muhsin Muhammad to talk to Lucas. After being treated for several minutes, the Panthers' starting cornerback walked onto a cart and was taken to the locker room. There was no immediate update on the extent of his injuries.

Smith was kicked out of practice and spent several minutes talking to kicker John Kasay on an adjacent field. He later walked into the locker room while practice continued.

Fox said it hasn't been determined if Smith will be suspended.

You guys are slippin man. I've been hearing about this on the radio from my car all morning.

Sounds like Steve Smith really handed Lucas his ass.

Thoughts?

Seems like Steve Tyson struck again. After he beat that player up in the meeting, I don't see why Lucas would get into anything with him.

Yeah, I remember when he beat the hell out of a player during a film session because he pointed out one of Smith's mistakes on special teams.

Good teammate Steve.

Who knows who started it. Steve Smith has always been known as a hot tempered guy. He gets pretty intense at times and I'm not to surprised that he came out of the winning end of this one.

I don't know who started it but if we can take anything from the articles and stuff that are out there it appears as if Steve Smith was the one to blame. I haven't heard anything about Lucas getting suspended or sent home or anything. Smith on the other hand was told to leave practice and its rumored that a suspension may be in order.

We'll need more information than that to be sure but I haven't heard a word that indicates fault on the part of LUcas.

To me, this gives away who was at fault

Doesn't this vault him near the top of the list of worst teammates in the NFL? He has sent two of his own teammates to the hospital already.

According to two people who were standing on the sideline, Smith was complaining that Lucas was grabbing him and clutching his jersey throughout the play, and Lucas was angry because Smith clubbed him in the back in retaliation.

Both went to the sideline after the play, and the jawing continued back and forth. Then with Lucas on one knee, Smith rose and punched him in the face, triggering the scrum.
The Herald | HeraldOnline.com - Smith punches Lucas in eye, melee ensues - Rock Hill, SC

Seems like Smith started it because he was mad he was being held on a play. Also from the story, seems like other teammates tried to get at Smith as well.

wow, smith is definitely looking like one of the worst teammates in the league.

it helps explain a lot about the panthers lack of chemistry the last few years too.

He punched Lucas when Lucas was on his knees? Smith didn't 'hand Lucas his ass,' he rabbit punched him
