News Panthers turn back the clock with Muhammad

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP)—Jake Delhomme was watching television in February when he saw the crawl that Muhsin Muhammad had been released by the Chicago Bears.

Less than 20 minutes later, the Panthers quarterback was on the phone with teammate Steve Smith, plotting a way to get Muhammad back in Carolina.

“We were saying we got to somehow get it done, because we know how much he means to this offense,” Delhomme said. “We were selfish. He can help me and Steve. We wanted him to be back.”

Most people forget that his last year in Carolina, he had like 1,400 plus yards and something like 12 or 14 TD's.

with a QB that was halfway decent and a good running game....neither of which exist anymore

He was also in a contract year that year.

Its no coincidence that he broke 1000 yards in only 2 of the 8 years before that and not in any of the 3 years prior to 2004.

Its also no coincidence his big year came in '04, the year when passing statistics exploded due to changes in defensive coverage penalties and that his numbers declined the following year when everyone elses did.

Oh, and he wasn't 35 years old in 2004 either.
