Panthers sign Landon Johnson

Bengals linebacker Landon Johnson has agreed to a three-year deal in Carolina, agent Andy Simms said Friday morning. Cincinnati made a late bid Thursday, but the Panthers' early interest and better offer secured the deal.

The Panthers look prepared to make Johnson a starter since he's the most high-profile free agent that has visited Charlotte. They may be trying to find a replacement for Na'il Diggs, an eight-year veteran who turns 30 before the season. Diggs is the starting weakside linebacker next to two first-round draft picks in middle linebacker Jon Beason and strongside backer Thomas Davis.

Good signing for the Panthers. You get a pretty speedy, undersized, productive linebacker that can play all 3 positions in a 4-3. He's not a game changer, but he is solid.

You'll be glad to have him, and I'm sad to see him go. He won't wow you too often, but he'll end the season close to the team lead in tackles and will play tough all season long.
