From the Editorial Page of the Richmond Times-Dispatch July 7, 2008

Editor Times-Dispatch

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30, I celebrate my independence day and on July 4, I celebrate America's. This year is special because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence. On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba and a few months later I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950's, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, and they were right. So when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said "Praise the Lord". And when the young leader said, "I wil be for change and I'll bring you change, everyone yelled, "Viva Fidel!"

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the executioner's guns went silent the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him By the time the change was finally implemented Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we would never fall in America for a left leaning young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America? Would we?
In other news, about this time of year every year I start quietly rooting for the Marlins to lose. Reason being I don't want baseball season to interfere with football season longer than it has to and with the Hurricanes now playing in the Dolphins stadium I have twice the reason. You see the dirt infield is a hinderance to the football teams. It causes problem and yes the other team has to deal with it as well but I've seen the Dolphins kickers miss short field goals because they're kicking off the dirt, or the QB slip cause of that dirt infield. Most Dolphin fans hate that dirt infield and now the Hurricane fans will hate it too. Unfortunately the Marlins new stadium won't be ready until the 2011 season so we have 2 more years to put up with it. The Hurricanes will only have to play on it twice this season which is OK but still more than I'd like.

Why the Dolphins didn't draft a Corner or WR is beyond me. The Dolphins strongest position is Running back yet we took two RB's in the draft and no corner or WR. This WR corp sucks. Possibly the worst I've seen here since the days where all we had was O.J. McDuffie but at least you knew O.J. was going to catch whatever was thrown to him. I've never liked Ernest Wilford. He has a penchant for dropping passes and Ted Ginn is too much of a pansie to be an effective WR. Then you have Kircus who's a journeyman with character issues and Derek Hagan who has got to be one of the worst WR's I've ever seen. I mean at some point your job is to catch the freakin ball Hagan. That's what your position calls for, someone who can catch the ball!

As for the corners, we have no speed or depth and no playmakers back there. We got burned deep so many times last year it's not even funny. A lot of that was due to the safeties not providing help over the top (crappy game plan and even worse coaching) but in a division where you have Randy Moss (1,493 yards rec. 23 TDs), Jerricho Cotchery (1,180 yards rec.), Lee Evans (849 yards rec. and would have been more had he not had a rookie throwing to him) how can you not address one of the weakest units on the team?

I realize that this team is very weak and that you build teams for the inside out but personnally I would rather have passed on Chad Henne and taken a QB later and used that pick to get a WR or Corner and used one of the picks that they used for a RB for another Corner or WR.

Being a Marlins fan I sort of know what the Tampa Bay Rays fans are going through. In 2003 we had a young team, a small payroll and a cinderella season winning the World Series over the Yankees in 6 games. That season was even more improbable by the fact that the Marlins were 19.5 games under .500 when Jack McKeon took over and began our ascension to the top.

In some ways the Rays season is better than that of the Marlins. While the Marlins rise was a complete surprise the Rays have been at or near the top all season and only now are people starting to believe this team is for real. The best record in baseball for the second lowest payroll in baseball. That is fantastic. Even though I'm not a Tampa Bay Rays fan it's pretty exciting. Hopefully they can finish the job.

Take your freakin base and play the game, there's no need to retaliate. Make the other team pay by batting the runner in. It's just stupid.

You know the NHL cleaned up their act by not allowing so much fighting, which was a huge part of the NHL game. Why can't baseball take a stand to stop this stupidity? Oh, let me guess, they're afraid of the MLBPA. The biggest mafia in the world.

Someone's gonna have to be traded or moved to another position. I don't know that Marion has the quickness and speed to play SF either.

The trade for Mario Chalmers gives us a true, young PG which we needed badly. Chris Quinn got a lot of valuable play time last year which should help him become a decent backup.

It will be fun to track this team next year and see how Chalmers and Beasley do. Other than that I care not about the NBA as a whole...just the Heat. Certainly nothing like the way I feel for the NFL.

Definitely not as good as Iron Man but I am excited to see the Avengers movie although I seem to be confused as to who will be in it. Is it the original Avengers without Capt. America or is he in it?

There were a few things I didn't like, like in the first movie when the Hulk jumped he could travel miles and this Hulk was jumping from building to building like he couldn't get above the roof tops. That was the biggest thing that bothered me. I also didn't like the guy they got to play Sterns, who becomes Leader after absorbing Bruce Banners blood in his head wound (in the movie). To me Leader looks more like Tony Stark but with a big head, lol.
