Braylon Edwards rips Rich Rodriguez over #1 jersey tradition

When Braylon Edwards funded a Michigan scholarship revolving around the No. 1 jersey in April 2006, he felt he would have some say in the distribution.

His coach, Lloyd Carr, supported that notion as Edwards was the most recent U-M receiver to have the honor.

Apparently that deal retired when Carr did.

When Edwards found out that new coach Rich Rodriguez was planning to give the jersey to an incoming defensive back, he was angry enough to take his concerns public.

In a Tuesday ESPN.com chat, Edwards made his feeling known.

Even if he never explicitly mentioned position, it was also setup around the NO FRESHMEN policy because it's a reward with a scholarship attached to it, not just a number...

It does suck, it's a tradition thing, and I hate to see new coaches come in and stomp on something like that. Syracuse has a tradition like this for #44, it was such a storied tradition, that when they offered the jersey number to Walter Reyes in his senior year, he turned it down.

I liked what Michigan did with the #1.

Plenty of people who are already concerned about Rodriguez's perceived lack of caring for the tradition of Michigan football, ironically, myself included.

It's one more step towards potentially alienating the fanbase quickly if things don't go well.

ok, from that perspective I get it. Tradition is important.

I can deal with all the crap going on with him and WVU, because I place a lot of that on the bitterness of WVU fans..

But this is one thing you don't touch.. RR is a madman if he gives Floyd the 1 jersey.. He isn't even a highly recruited guy.

I could deal with a freshman, that is okay with me.

It's the fact that it is going to a DB that angers me. I don't know what Billy Martin is doing, but he better get those thumbs out of his you know what and do something about this.
