Cuse Syracuse finally fires Greg Robinson

Quote:
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Greg Robinson's career as Syracuse coach started poorly and never got better. When he was fired with two games left in a fourth straight dismal season, even he figured it was coming.

"I don't think it really comes as a surprise to anyone. It doesn't come as a surprise to me," Robinson said at a news conference Sunday. "I ran out of time. I still see improvement. As always, I'm optimistic. I think with more time I could do better. Obviously, I didn't get it done. That's the bottom line. I understand why the decision was made, so I go from there"

Not sure why it took this long. Even Robinson made it sound like this was a no-brainer.

I hope that the next guy does better, or else next time it might be AD Daryl Gross getting fired, and he was a big part of my time at USC where he was an associate athletic director at USC while I was a work study employee there. He's a great guy and was instrumental to the day-to-day operations at USC while he was there, so I expect that he's management there should be doing pretty well; just needs to find the right talent on the coaching staff to help him out. I wonder if we'll see Lane Kiffin interviewed....

I’m sorry YoHo, but Gross deserves to go out the door with Robinson for helping drive that program into the ground. His first big splash as the new AD is to fire the second winningest coach in Syracuse history after a 6-6 season. He took Syracuse to 9 bowls in 14 years and only had one losing record. Pasqualoni deserved much better than what he got. Bringing in Kiffin as head coach would just be another genius idea. At least get a guy that won’t use it as a stepping stone and knows the area recruiting-wise.

I do want to remind you (and I have no idea about the details behind this) that an athletic department is far far more than a football team... and while football and basketball programs often make the money to support the rest, thus the importance of their success, an athletic director should not be viewed by the progress of a football team, but of a department. The two are related, but not exclusive. I have no idea how the fund raising, marketing, financial bottom line and success of the numerous other sports programs are going... but those have to be considered, as well.

Also, the coach that was fired had been to 1 bowl in his past 3 years--the one bowl being in their 6-6 season, and they lost that bowl game. It's not like the program was this great thing. After 1999, when it ended a run of 11 bowl games in 13 years, they saw 2 bowl games in the next 5 years with only one season above 6 wins, I believe. The replacement washed out, to be sure, but it doesn't mean it wasn't the time for Pasqaloni to go.

From 2000 to 2004, Penn State went 5-7, 5-6, 9-4, 3-9, and 4-7. Should Paterno have been fired as well? The fact remains that Pasqualoni was a quality coach, and Gross wanted to make a big splash by bringing in a hire of his own. The program WAS this great thing. It turned out NFL-quality players during his whole tenure and graduated at least 70% of his players during most of it.

Keep in mind that it is irrelevant how successful the sports after the Big 2 are if football and men’s basketball aren’t good enough to keep the department afloat. Gross went out and cut swimming when other programs were the ones losing real money.

Read this article……it’s very interesting what he’s done there.
