Wvu Magee says he was passed up because he was black

Quote:
Magee says he wanted to stay at West Virginia but wasn't taken seriously because he is black
Sunday, January 20, 2008
By Chuck Finder, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

One month later, Calvin Magee's emotions remain jumbled.

He still feels angered because of a Dec. 21 request by the West Virginia athletic director that he become a meaningless minority candidate. That, Magee said, was apparently so administrators could mollify the Black Coaches association director who hours earlier inquired why the Mountaineers hadn't interviewed any minority members, such as him.

He still feels mistreated because someone from the university's Legal Counsel came to his Puskar Center door Dec. 19 and, wielding a warrant-like letter, confiscated his cell phone and West Virginia office materials.

He still feels upset that his seven years of West Virginia service seemingly amounted to little in the end, when, he said, he was never asked to remain as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

I'm sorry I don't really care about the race issue.

But all those RR blasters take a look at the article and read where he says the stuff about being a Mountaineer for life.

Seems as if RR isn't the only guy to be shoveling onto. WVU is just as bad in this situation.

I don't hear white coaches making up this kind of crap when they don't get the promotion that they feel they deserve. I guess the guy for the Redskins that all the players want should say the same thing if they promote him as well.

Their are black coaches all around the league in college and the NFL. In the NFL they have a freaking Rooney rule which is ridiculous in my opinion, but it is there and there are black head coaches and assistant coaches all over college and the pros. It is guys like this guy who set a bad example in society to make other young black males make racial issues out of anything. He should have better judgement than this and i wouldn't want to hire a guy like this, because I would think that he'll probably make a racial issue for the next program he goes to when something doesn't go his way as again.

I am so sick of hearing about Mike Singletary as well. I loved him as a player and I think he has done well as a position coach, but everytime a vacancy is open it almost seems like the media is trying to push Singletary on some team and ask why he isn't being hired or interviewed to become a head coach even though he has been interviewed before. Singletary has never even been a coordinator, but they still ask why he isn't a head coach? It is ridiculous.

I'm not gonna disagree with you.. But I think while he is making the wrong argument, Magee has a point. WVU are being racist towards him, but in a far different way.

I fully believe that this program did not interview Magee for a reason. Was it race? I doubt it, but don't put it past WVU.

I think they are upset at him for being close to Rich. He actually went to the press conference with Rich and was there but at that point he was only there for support. I think if WVU wanted to interview the guy to be the head coach, he would have interviewed. WVU is completely ridiculous. He can't throw that crazy notion out there, so he's playing the race card.

Yes, it sounds like they could have treated him a little better but they did issue an apology and their is nothing there whatsoever that suggests he was not interviewed because he was black. Nothing at all. I have seen a ton of white coaches deal with the same type of thing where they feel that they university could ahve shown them more respect or more consideration, but they are not coming out and screaming racism. When guys like him go out and spit out more of this false propoganda it only makes younger athletes and youth carry on this trend of false race issues. The guy should no better.
