BAL Flacco gets nod as Ravens starting quarterback

Quote:
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco will start in the season opener Sunday for the Baltimore Ravens, who awarded the job to their top draft pick because he’s the healthiest player at the position.

Flacco, the 18th pick overall, will launch his NFL career against the Cincinnati Bengals. There is a chance the two other quarterbacks competing for the job, Troy Smith and Kyle Boller, both will not be available as backups.

“It wouldn’t be realistic to have one of those two guys as a starter, for sure. If they can back up, I think that would be an upset,” coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

This is a bad idea. They should start Harrington even though he was just signed. This could really ruin Flacco, he's not ready.

They signed Harrington? That is a good pick up for them. Boller is useless, Harrington is at least a viable backup. Flacco was there only real choice here. Boller as previuosly stated is useless and Smith will never be a viable starter so why try.

Troy Smith should have gotten that slot. Let Flacco ride the bench and learn for a while.

I highly doubt that EP. He doesn't have any receiving targets, and their O line isn't great either. He's really going to need their running game to go. I don't think that Willis Mcgahee is going to have that good of a season either. Hopefully Rice can do real well.

Look, people said last season that Mcgahee wasn't going to have a good year and that he was an overrated back and that he'd never amount to anything. Then on a team with merely a decent o-line, no QB and the same WR's he had a great season and was again one of the better backs in the league.

At some point people are going to have to overlook the fact that they dont like him personally for whatever reason and admit that he's a very talented running back. He's not a product of a great line like many backs we've seen before. He's not a product of a great passing game like other backs we've seen. He's got an incredible amount of talent and god knows what he could do if he ever landed on a team that had other talent around him.

With that said, when a guy has that kind of talent I find it hard to predict a "bad" year for him. Barring injury Mcgahee will do well this year and be the cornerstone of the team again. If nothing else, he'll take some pressure off of whoever is playing QB there.

My concern with him is that he's coming from an offense where he never lined up under center. He was in shotgun the whole time.
