According to ESPN, he is their number one target and it would surprise them if he is not named the head coach.

Mort is saying that he would be extremely surprised if Pete Carroll doesn't become the new head coach, and could be a done deal by the end of the week.
Is it the best move? He's been solidly mediocre as a head coach in the NFL in the past.

Bad move for the Seahawks.
they tried this with erickson but had success when they went with the experienced holmgren.

It is believed Pete would have complete control if hired.

I agree. But since when has Carroll expressed interest in wanting to return to the NFL any way?
I just don't see why he would go anywhere else personally. He'll never find a better situation than what he's got at USC, and I don't see how he doesn't love that job if coaching is what he likes to do.

Carroll's text message to Mort..."You know I haven't responded to an NFL question in two years."

Seems to me like being a college coach is a great, great job and being an NFL coach is kind of a crappy one. Still, Seattle must have had a big name in mind to can Mora.

Mike riley and Jeff fisher are leading canidates to replace Pete supposedly. Pete helped build that pats dynasty so I wouldn't dismiss him so easily

I think you've missed all the drama going on for USC right now. Someone else on another boards posted this:
There's a lot of good reasons Carroll should leave now.
1. USC's basketball team just got the hammer dropped on them for the OJ Mayo mess. USC football has been under investigation with Reggie Bush and recently Joe McKnight (who also declared he's going pro). Carroll won't want to stick around if USC football gets put on probation.
2. USC is going to lose a lot of key players again this year and Carroll might not want to go through a rebuilding season and rather cash in his chips now while he still has "god-like" status as head coach.
3. Seattle Seahawks are on the West Coast, they have an interim GM (Carroll wants complete control and this is the reason he turned down the San Diego job), a fantastic stadium and a lot of money to spend. Not to mention the NFC West is probably the least competitive division in the NFL.
Huge loss not only for USC, but also the city of Los Angeles if he leaves. Carroll does A LOT of work with the community and inner city kids.
Several good points, but USC could easily turn from a good situation to a disaster.

Carroll has incentive leave for sure but if I'm Seattle I go for a more experienced coach
Jeff Fisher to USC? Really?
Mike Riley would be a great and deserving candidate, he and Erickson were both candidates back when Carroll was hired and Riley of course was the offensive coordinator under Robinson at USC before becoming OSU's savior
That being said I think it'd be tough to pry Riley from Corvallis. Corvallis is his home town and his staff is 100% in place and his program continues to get stronger every year. He is a master at delegating duties to his assistants while managing team mentality and right now he has all that in place.

He has very strong USC ties, won a national championship as a player, and was an assistant for John Robinson when Robinson coached the Rams. He's still pretty close to the program til this day. He was the one who gave Norm Chow his NFL opportunity a few years ago too if you recall.

All well and good, but are his current ties in Tennessee stronger than the ones he has with USC? I feel that way. The way he turned the Titans around the second half of the season after going 0-6, with Vince Young finally looking like he could be the real deal...I feel he's got the ball rolling there, and has unfinished business in Tennessee.

How you feel is how YOU feel, but it's how coach Fisher feels that matters. I'm not sure whether you (or I for that matter) are in position to compare the strength of his ties with the Trojans and with the Titans, especially when you weren't even aware he had ties to the Trojans to begin with..
I mean, every year they bring up firing him, and every year he has to deal with Bud Adams mettling. I imagine that gets old real fast.
That said, i'm not saying he's interested in the position. What i'm saying is that his name always comes up when talking about Carroll replacements. It's not exactly out of the realm of possibility, but it's just another name in the hat. As I said in the other thread, Riley is my top choice.

I don't know anything about this Fisher situation or even how that came into play. However since it is in play in here any way, you're exactly right about Bud's meddling. He's always been that way for decades. He was always that way with every coach he ever had in Houston. And one person mentioned the Titans turn around, but what people forget is that Fisher never wanted to put VY into play. Bud basically made him do it. Yeah it worked, but Fisher never wanted to do it. Even when they were like 0-5, Fisher still didn't want VY to be the QB. It was pretty clear that Fisher didn't want to coach VY as the starter and now VY has already been named the starter going into next season. If you really think deeply, at some point Fisher has got to be sick and tired of working for Bud Adams and coaching out there. Most coaches want a change of scenery or a break at some point and Cowher was the only guy that had coached a little longer than Fisher has that's currently still coaching.
Would Fisher want to coach the college game though and have to go recruit? It's such a different atmosphere and list of responsibilities.
Who else do you think would be on USC's short list of candidates?

I think J Ray touched a little on this in his post.
Why Carroll? Why now?
I think he may be getting out of Dodge here, so to speak. Perhaps he feels that USC is really close to seeing some severe NCAA sanctions thrown on them.
Only question I have, why Seattle?

My questions as well? Why Seattle?
That team is in total disarray. They have no QB, no WR's, not really a good defense at all either. There is a lot of work to do over there. A ton of work.
It's got to be some big problems coming towards USC pretty soon.

Report: Carroll wants Chow, not Bates | ProFootballTalk.com (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/10/report-carroll-wants-chow-not-bates/)
When the Pete Carroll news first broke, he was expected to bring USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates with him to Seattle.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that Carroll actually prefers another former USC coach. Carroll is trying to lure Norm Chow to come with him to Seattle.

I read those reports yesterday, and I dont know, I would be surprised if that were true. Chow and Carroll had a falling out, so I can't imagine them all of a sudden buddying up at this level. Perhaps their 'falling out' was overstated?

Jeremy Bates is going with him to be the offensive coordinator according to Mort. He's also taking Ken Norton Jr. to be the linebacker coach.

I don't think he could get him out of Arizona without overpaying for him both because its a division rival and because the Arizona coaches have been singing Leinarts praises for the last season and a half. Bad move if you ask me but who knows how much truth there is to it anyway.
He should just stick with Hasselbeck for another couple of years until Matt Barkley declares.

I actually think there's a better chance Reggie Bush ends up in Seattle, even with Forsett playing well. They seem to be thin at RB, and the Saints appear more ready to give up on Bush than the Cards on Leinart
Leinart didn't exactly help himself by playing like crap in the season finale, but with all the Cards have invested in him, i think they have to see what he's got before giving up on him.
I think bringing Bates over to be OC is a mistake. He was a crappy OC for the Trojans, I dont know why he'd be a good choice in Seattle. I know he has experience as the Bronco's Oc, but Carroll needs someone older and more seasoned IMO.

He'd already be fired if they were in position to draft Barkley. It would mean they had the worst record in the league! (I'm only half serious)

.
we will see but i think the cards gave up on leinart a long time ago. they have been saying all the right things about the guy because they still needed him as a back-up qb. But, if you look at the play-calling when he has been under center, it doesn't exactly exude confidence in the guy. In fact, the play-calling is on par with what the jets are needing to do for mark sanchez just to keep him from messing up too badly.
i want leinart to go to seattle with carroll. i think it would be entertaining.

If they already gave up on him long ago, they have a funny way of showing it - by not putting another qb in place. Given that they know Warner is close to the end, what your telling me is that they don't think leinart is the answer but they choose not to address post Warner. that Makes no sense.
