More specifically red zone offense inside the 10. Out of the 9 plays that the Redskins had inside the Rams 10 yard line yesterday, we threw 5 passes, which doesn't sound too bad since it was balanced. 1 was from Clinton Portis.
So Campbell threw 4 passes inside the red zone yesterday. Now let's look at Campbell's 4 passes: shovel pass to Portis, short middle to Devin Thomas(thrown in the end zone), short middle to Sellers pass was dropped and would have been a sure TD, and short right to Randle El. Only 1 pass was thrown in the end zone and 0 passes were thrown to our only true red zone threat Chris Cooley(he was the intended receiver on the Portis pass though).
All 3 first downs were run plays for 1 yard, -2 yards, and no gain. 2nd down plays were 1 run, 1 shovel pass, and 1 dump off pass to the FB. So the only time we really even tried to score a TD was on 3rd down. 3rd down were 3 passes, 2 by Campbell 1 by Portis.
This has to change if we want to be a good team. I'm not sure how much of this is Jason Campbell's fault checking down his receivers or the offensive coordinators fault for calling these predictable plays. Chris Cooley HAS to be the intended receiver at some point. He is easily your best red zone threat. Also why not try a corner post to Devin Thomas or Malcolm Kelly, both big threats?
Other than that I was pretty impressed with the decisions that Campbell made. He tucked it down and ran several times, which I would like to see him do more if it opens up because he is an athletic QB that can get first downs that way. We had 362 yards of total offense and only got sacked once. Only had 1 turnover, a Moss fumble.
