Some things to note from the Texans' first preseason game this past weekend...

-Matt Schaub played great football, Dan Orlovsky, decent, Rex Grossman, five snaps, a bunch of mistakes, one injury.

Scour the waiver wire.

-Connor Barwin got a sack in his first preseason game.

-Ryan Moats, 10 carries 51 yards, not a bad outing.

Barwin played pretty well overall. He sniffed out one screen and made the tackle, came pretty close to getting a INT on another and then had his sack. I was pretty impressed by his performance in the first game.

I was out of town so I missed the game. I'm recording every pre season game though, and I'll probably watch this one tonight.

He's an athletic guy, and if you put him out there against other teams' twos and threes, he's going to put up big numbers.

I'm curious to see what he does against number one tackles who've been playing the game for quite a while and he has to rely on technique rather than just pure athleticism.

They need to test him with the 1st D some in the preseason to test him against top tackels. I really like to see him opposite or Mario.

Have you been able to watch it yet Tex? I'd be interested to hear your comments from the first game.

The Texans are one of the most intriguing teams to me this season. I think if they play to their potential not only can they go over 500 for the first time in franchise history, but they could win one of the toughest divisions in the NFL.

Watched a little bit, but to be honest I watched most of it really fast as I've been paying more attention to other teams as far as the pre season games I've been watching. I read a lot of stuff on the Texans boards, so I'm able to get a lot of break downs over there. I'll be going to the game tonight though, so I won't be missing nothing. :)

IN the first game, I heard Barwin had a really impressive sack where he made some nice spin move and had another nice play.

I read that Casey looked really nice and is looking like a total steal already. Shaub looked real good, I did notice that myself.

Duane Brown seemed to play pretty well from what I heard and looked very improved.

Ryan Moats ran the ball pretty well and had good numbers. When Slaton was in the defense was killing all of the holes and running lanes so he wasn't able to do much.

I heard Rex Grossman played terribly.

The more important question with Ryan Moats is how is his pass blocking and blitz pickup coming along and what's his full understanding of the offense?

In Philly those are the areas that he struggled in. He always showed great ability with the ball in his hands, had great vision, great agility, was fast with good moves, hit holes hard, got through tight spots, and was tough for defenses to get solid hits on. It was those other areas though that ended up being his undoing. He didn't pickup the blitz well and never developed in pass protection. He was also limited in what offensive packages he could play in due to what was described as difficulty learning the schemes.

Well, I'm glad that you mentioned that, because I'll watch out for how he does in that regard tonight at the game. He didn't play a ton last season and came in late, so he wasn't really getting carries until the end of the season, but as far as running the ball he wasn't to bad actually. Nothing great or spectacular, but not bad either. I didn't notice him being bad in pass protection last season, but he might have and I just didn't notice it. Slaton was in the game more often though.
