The Buckeyes could have a tough time with the Navy option, but I don't expect the offense to have problems against the Middies' defense.

GatorsRock
08-18-2009, 02:09 PM
Well the Buckeyes front 7 will get a lot of work. How many starters on defense do they return?

Chris Raiden
08-18-2009, 02:11 PM
I believe the entire defensive line is back and very solid. We return one linebacker (Homan) and both safeties.

GatorsRock
08-18-2009, 02:13 PM
It'll be a good test for the guys following Lauranitis and Freeman, but I think Ohio State rolls. I wouldn't be surprised to see Navy put up more points on them then most people expect. (20+)

Chris Raiden
08-18-2009, 02:14 PM
I highly doubt that. This is a Buckeye defense that is geared to stop the run cold, and it's not going to let up just because it's Navy.

I know it's not going to let up, but regardless of how many reps you practice against the option, the option is still VERY VERY difficult to stop.

Chris Raiden
08-18-2009, 02:17 PM
You've got a team with linebackers that can run and a defensive line that's gap disciplined, along with safeties and corners who can support against the run.

I'm not worried.

ya I don't think navy cracks 20 against the buckeyes but it'll still be a nice game to watch

Sascha
08-19-2009, 06:46 AM
I think it all depends on if Navy can break a few long TD plays, which is what the option is intended for. It's hard to find running room for the option when you're in the red zone, so if Navy does a lot of running between the 20's, I don't expect a lot of points. But if they break a couple of 50+ yard scores, then that's 14 right there. I think they could make it close to 20.

Chris Raiden

Brandon Saine off a reverse on the kickoff return gives the Bucks great field position.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:06 PM
DeVier Posey makes a great catch in traffic for a first down! Expect to see that hookup a lot this season.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:09 PM
Pryor's pressured, moves left and finds Dane Sanzenbacher over the middle for a 38 yard catch and run for the Bucks' first touchdown of the year!

7-0 Buckeyes!

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:10 PM
Pryor goes 2/4 for 47 yards and a touchdown on the first drive. Good start.

The misses were both throws on the move to the sidelines.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:13 PM
Navy comes out throwing, passes on the first two plays from scrimmage for them.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:14 PM
Navy's converting for first downs here. Moving the ball well with the option right now.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:17 PM
And now the Buckeyes pick up on this option. Using the size advantage up front to knock the linemen back to stuff the play. Good job.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:21 PM
Not a good sign when an option quarterback runs it in from 16 yards...straight up the middle.

7-7 tie with 5:43 left in the opening quarter.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:29 PM
BOOM Herron gets a pretty good run to the outside. He's looking better on this drive. 14 yards and a Buckeye first down.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:29 PM
Pryor is REALLY looking good. Playaction dropback, he saw Jake Ballard open down the field and nailed him for a bunch.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:30 PM
Pryor's first designed run gets 12 or so. This guy is on his game today.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:34 PM
We've got a 3rd and 13, Pryor gets rid of the ball wisely getting back what he can and not making a mistake.

Aaron Pettrey knocks it through for 3, it's now 10-7 Buckeyes.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:34 PM
Terrelle Pryor Update: 5/8 for 80 yards with a touchdown thus far through the air, 1 carry for 11 yards.

Hey, he looks like a quarterback!

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:39 PM
FINALLY the linebackers don't just bite down on the quarterback on the counter option. Nice job by Brian Rolle coming over the top there to make the play on the outside.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:40 PM
Good job staying at home on third down, which was all setup by the stop on second down on the outside counter option pitch.

End of one, Ohio State leads 10-7 with the ball coming their way.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:44 PM
First play of the quarter, Navy comes out on fourth down with the offense and tries a bunch of movement to try to draw an offsides.

Buckeye defense stays still, doesn't jump. Here comes the punting unit for the Midshipmen.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:47 PM
WOW!

What could have been a safety, Pryor gets rid of the ball to Herron, who gets it back to the line of scrimmage.

Great play to save two points there without throwing it away. Nice blitz from Navy.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:48 PM
Terrelle needs to make a better read there in picking up the zone blitz, finding the weakness and exploiting it quickly Needs to get rid of the ball quickly in that situation.

This was all set up by a block in the back on the punt return and a dropped snap on first down. All comes down to execution folks.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:51 PM
THADDEUS GIBSON!!!

Pursues across the line, grabs the quarterback from behind, strips the ball. Ross Homan recovers, BUCKEYE FOOTBALL!!!

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:52 PM
And Pryor makes a tremendous play shirking two defenders on the rollout and hitting Jake Ballard for a first down!

the triple option willjust never be enough against the speed of the elite schools

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:54 PM
Duron Carter (son of Cris) has his first collegiate catch. Not a great throw by Pryor, but it got there, and Carter made the catch.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:55 PM
And then Pryor makes another great throw to Sanzenbacher down the field, right on target. Difficult throw too.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:55 PM

It isn't the offense, it's the guys running it really. Navy's undersized due to restrictions on how big their guys can be, whereas a school like Georgia Tech running it can get the big quick uglies they need to properly run it.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:56 PM
Playaction naked boot to the left, and Terrelle Pryor has his second designed run and his first rushing touchdown of the season.

17-7 Buckeyes, and they're picking up speed.

very good point.

Nice easy TD run by Pryor. His strides are so long he doesn't look fast.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 12:57 PM
Pryor watch: 10/13 for 127 and a touchdown throwing, 3 carries for 12 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

I think we had a thread about that somewhere around here that LA and I argued til we were blue in the face.

Navy converts the third and six with a nice throw from Ricky Dobbs.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:05 PM
The Buckeyes are starting to back up a bit, standup the ends, and avoid the cut blocks. It's working.

Nice play by Nathan Williams to setup a third and long situation, which the Bucks stuff.

And Dane Sanzenbacher is making us say "Ray Who?" on punt returns, he looks very good back there right now.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:08 PM
In the Tressel tradition, backup QB Joe Bauserman is getting a series here early in the game to get him some game experience.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:09 PM
Saine stutter steps through a bunch of tackles for 14 yards up the middle.

He's starting to look like a running back. What happened there?

Usually, the first game is a gimme type game, so he wants the guys to play with the first teamers in a situation that actually matters to get them into the feel of playing real gametime conditions.

Chris Raiden

Wow, that is the second time today Boom's lost his helmet. This time, to no avail. It'll be fourth down for the Buckeyes.

Makes sense that way even though they know there is no real danger it's not like the came is completely over and nothing you do matters.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:12 PM
They go for it on fourth down and convert! Brandon Saine up the middle for four big yards to continue the drive for Bauserman and the Buckeyes!

Justin Boren with the key block there.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:13 PM
Nice screen play to Herron there with Boren out in front leading the way. 19 yards and another Buckeye first down.

Chris Raiden

Chris Spielman apparently had in his pregame notes to himself to be balanced and not refer to OSU as "we".

He's wearing a scarlet and gray tie :D

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:21 PM
Aaron Pettrey knocks through his second field goal to make it 20-7 with 55 seconds left in the first half.

Why they let him call a OSU game is beyond me. To me, he's a good analyst, but he's too much of a homer to call an OSU game.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:46 PM
Not a good start for Navy here. Fumbles on the kickoff return and the first play. They're in the shadow of their own goalpost here looking at third and very long.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:48 PM
Buckeye ball at the Navy 41 after a fair catch.

This could be the nail in the coffin drive.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:51 PM
Three straight penalties here. Ouch.

Bucks keep backing up giving Navy some room to breathe.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:52 PM
We're looking at a long third down here. 3rd and 22 it will be for Pryor.

tOSU with 3 straight penalties.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:54 PM
Had Duron Carter open down the field on a slant route and he JUST missed him. Needed to wait just another second to deliver it.

Jon Thoma's punt bounces down inside the one where the Buckeyes keep it from bouncing into the end zone. It'll be first and 10 for the Midshipmen from JUST inside the one.

william00777
09-05-2009, 01:56 PM
the punt was the only good thing about those two opening drives. you should come out half time much more crisp than that

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 01:58 PM
Yep, can't do that next week against USC.

The Midshipment just picked up a first down on a great third effort from the quarterback.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 02:03 PM
Navy's putting together a nice drive here. The Bucks keep losing outside contain and it's starting to get very dicey here.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 02:03 PM
Thad Gibson makes a nice play, but it results in a facemask penalty. Ouch.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 02:12 PM
Navy's put together quite a drive here.

They're at the 17 with a third and long here. Touchdown Navy on a great throw by Ricky Dobbs.

About to be 20-14 and my 1,000 MVPs looks as good as gone.

It's an option based offense. Take a step back LA, it's barely relevant right now.

Chris Raiden

Brandon Saine comes out with two quick runs out of the no huddle for a quick first down here.

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 02:17 PM
Pryor to Herron on the option for the Bucks. How 'bout that pitch eh?

They're running the ball here from good field position. About to be the end of the third, it'll be Buckeyes ball on second and short at the Navy 40ish.

Terrelle Pryor on first down finds the tastefully named Jake Stoneburner (tight end) for a nice gain.

Chris Raiden

Touchdown Buckeyes!

Boom Herron runs it in off the pitch from Pryor to make it 29-14 Buckeyes as Aaron Pettrey misses the extra point.

It wasn't just the pass defense. OSU did not look good at all up front. They should have dominated the line of scrimmage, and they obviously didn't do that on either side of the ball. IMO, that was what cost them against SC last year. SC's controlled the line of scrimmage in both sides of the ball. They return their entire O line, and I know OSU returns their D line, so we might very well see more of the same because it's the same matchups. The SC D line is very new though less Everson Griffin, so we shall see how that ends up, but I'm pretty sure they are better than Navy's guys

Chris Raiden
09-05-2009, 03:15 PM
That's a problem, but I'm not as concerned about the defense. They played a bit conservative today to try to not get hurt against the cut blocks from Navy, and succeeded.

Offensively, I'm a bit more worried obviously. Andy Miller was overmatched at LT and it showed, I hope Shugarts gets the start next week.
