McDaniels: Dialogue part of Marshall plan
The Broncos' coach deals with his unhappy wideout, who wants a better contract, by being open to discussions.

The Denver Post

As the Brandon Marshall holdout saga becomes increasingly agitated, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has attempted to send a message of peace.

Marshall's agent, Kennard Mc-Guire, made an aggressive negotiating move Tuesday by telling Fox 31 News that Marshall requested a trade during the wide receiver's one-on-one meeting with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen last Friday afternoon.

The meeting occurred after Marshall skipped the mandatory minicamp session that morning. Marshall later was spotted carrying packed boxes to his car before leaving the team's Dove Valley headquarters.

"Mr. Bowlen has said that ownership will do everything in its power to accommodate his wishes," McGuire told the television station.

Marshall, too, appears to be preparing for his exit from Denver. He wrote a new entry on his blog Tuesday afternoon in which he said, "Change is probably best" for him personally and professionally.

"It's hard leaving an organization ran (sic) by one of the best owners in all of sports, and someone who's been there for me through my ups and downs," Marshall wrote in an entry titled "Clearing the Air." "The hardest thing was hearing Mr. B wish me luck in the future, but we both came to the conclusion that this is probably the best thing for me to grow on and off the field." Marshall went on to thank Denver fans.

Despite the strong words from Marshall and his agent, there has been no indication the Broncos will seek to deal Marshall, who is unhappy with his contract that will pay him $2.198 million this season, the final year of his deal.

"We met after Pat's meeting with Brandon and we are going to continue our dialogue with Brandon and his representative," McDaniels said. "We look forward to having Brandon at training camp."

Bowlen declined a request seeking comment. Marshall has been one of the NFL's top receivers the previous two seasons, when he combined for 206 receptions, 2,590 yards and 13 touchdowns.

And you were just saying that there was no way he would be traded.

Its kind of interesting that Marshall would tell Bowlen and not McDaniels or Xander (he's still the GM, right?) that he wants out. It occurs to me that this is another indication of a deep rift between Marshall and management. Marshall had only nice things to say about Bowlen on his blog.

I don't think I've ever seen a situation where a new coach came in and screwed up the team this much ever before.

Bowlen has refused comment so we don't know what he really said. Marshall says that he told him he'd be traded. McD says that he met wtih Bowlen and they agreed he won't be traded. Who to believe? The disgrutled Diva receiver or the young, inexperienced, not sure what to believe coach? Its a mystery. I just wish Bowlen would come out and give a statement.

This is the same stuff that was being said before Cutler was traded. And these are the same denials that you had before all of this.

Regardless, if you guys don't trade him you're screwed in the long haul. The guy obviously doesn't want to be a Bronco and I told you that once Cutler was traded that a "Marshall effect" would happen later, and that Marshall effect is happening now. If you keep the guy and don't pay him he'll cause a ton of problems where he isn't worth having. If you pay him, then he'll eventually have problems with Mcdaniels because he'll have already gotten his way with management once, and he'll be a little bitter about Cutler being gone once the Broncs start losing some games and the QB play isn't what it was under Cutler, and then you have the off the field stuff. The bottom line now is that this situation isn't going to work with him in Denver for a ton of reasons.

Its funny how much Bowlen has been on the spot since moving Shanahan. I know he said that this was his team, but I don't think this is what he had in mind. Be careful what you ask for, I guess.

Yeah. You never heard many requests for comments from Pat before this!

He got to just sit back and enjoy being "the best owner in sports." Its hard when you don't have someone micromanaging every aspect of the franchise for you!

Do you think he tries to get Shanahan back at some point?

They haven't even had their anticipated losing season yet, so until then, no. But if I'm a Broncos' fan I sure am wishing they never fired Shanahan.

I hear that. As a Pats fan (Pats = Broncos *****) I'm cool with it for 2009.

Beyond the homerism, I can't see how Pat Bowlen replaced Mike Shanahan with Josh McDaniels. JM was a great OC/QB coach in NE, but stepping into MS shoes? I don't think so.

I think they were all overlooking what a big job it was that Shanahan was doing. He was running basically every aspect of the team. And They knew that intellectually, but didn't really understand how hard that would be to replace. They also read all the commentary about how that was a bad way to do business, and never thought about how if one person runs everything you have a lot less internal strife and there are many fewer opportunities for miscommunication.

When Shanahan was in charge, it was a really common story where someone was angry, they went to talk to Shanahan, and Shanahan told him exactly where he stood. The player or coach wasn't always happy, but they always expressed appreciation for that clarity and directness and I think Shanahan was super respected. Now if you have a problem, who do you go to? McDaniels? Xander? Bowlen? Its a real mess.
