The Broncos are returning No. 27 to the field.

Last worn Dec. 31, 2006, by cornerback Darrent Williams, the number will go to running back Knowshon Moreno, the Broncos' first draft choice

Moreno personally called Rosalind Williams, Darrent's mother, earlier this week to ask if he could wear the number. Rosalind gave her blessing. Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting Jan. 1, 2007, hours after playing in the Broncos' final regular-season game. Moreno's request for jersey No. 27 OK'd - The Denver Post (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_12276826)

Well looks like the Broncos didn't get a RB that is to high on himself. That move by Moreno should give him respect by all.

Very classy. Apparently he also is going to volunteer at the Darrent Williams program a few days a week.

He went about it the right way, but couldn't he have just picked another number? He didn't even wear #27 in college.

Slim pickins right now. and obviously 24 is already spoken for. He stated that he got to know Darrent's mom really well this summer so he kind of wanted to honor him in a way.

Slim pickings, but there's ninety-nine numbers that aren't from a player who was recently and senslessly murdered. I'm not that into it. It's nice that he asked Darrent's mom, but it would be nicer still if he was wearing #38 or something. What is he honoring Williams for? Was he a big Darrent Williams fan? Dude is from New Jersey. He's probably a Giants fan.

Carey Davis.I should rephrase that since Carey Davis is a fullback. Please name me one halfback who wears number thirty eight.

the article I read said that he got to know Williams' mom over the summer while he was training. Guess its him wanting to show some respect. Plus, 20-26 and 28, 29, 31, 32, 36, 39, 40, 42, 46, were taken by Vets. The others were taken by other rookies. So why not pay tribute?

Because he had no need to pay tribute? Do you want to pay tribute to John Elway by giving that Brandstater dude #7? When they want to pay tribute to someone they retire a number, they don't assign it to rookies.

Please name me one running back who wears number thirty eight.

Mike Anderson wore #38, which is why I selected that particular number. Is there a point to asking that question?

He actually got a lot of reps at halfback, which is why I named him, but either way, who cares if another halfback wears that number or not?

No, I like that Moreno is a Bronco. I think that was a reasonable pick. I've been advocating for Denver to take a back in the first round for years, and wanted them to take either Stewart or Mendenhall last year (though Clady proved me wrong). When Sanchez, Raji and Jackson were off the board, Moreno made as much sense as anyone, though all the Broncos fans here seem to be in agreement that we'd have taken Orakpo. I didn't have any major problems with the first two picks. I think taking a RB well help the defense significantly and our lack of a RB last year is why we missed the playoffs. I don't think that's even an arguable point.

The Moreno thing isn't keeping me up at night, it just strikes me as a little wrong. I feel like if we didn't have a new coach someone would have said "Nice thinking Rookie, I like that you talked to Darrent's mom. Now pick a different number. 27 is taken."

Alright, I thought it was you that was complaining about them picking him and figured you were just doing it because of that.

I see both sides of the story and it's really tough to choose. Williams' mother is endorsing it though.

And come on, Moreno is a first round pick - he couldn't pry #23 away from André "Not Even on the Roster" Hall? 26 From Jack "Who?" Williams? or 34 from Josh "Who?" Bell? Josh Barrett and Vernon Fox wouldn't give up their numbers for like $3,500? If numbers 20, 21, 25, 31, 32 or 40 are taken, the official Broncos roster doesn't say who has them.

The NFL allows running backs to wear any number between 20 and 49, so Moreno could have number 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 (I wouldn't give this one out either), 31, 32, 33, 37, 38, 40, 41, 44, 45, 47, 48 or 49 but he picked the only one of those numbers held by the dead guy. Just not sitting right for me.

And what the heck kind of a fox is a Vernon Fox anyway? Care to bet some MVPs on whether that dude makes the roster?

Yeah, I get why people would be okay with it. It just seems to me that leaving Darrent Williams' number "retired" was the classier way to go. I still feel weird when I see a Bronco wearing #30, #84 or #87, and will feel weird when I see someone in #80. And none of those numbers are attached to tragedy.

20 is taken...come on man. DAWKINS!!! :) I agree he could have taken a different number, and probably should have, but if he is friends with the family, and mom is on board, then I don't have a problem.

Heh, Denver hasn't assigned 20 to Dawkins yet according to the NFL.com roster! Maybe they'll give him #7 ;)

It is a non issue. Either a number is retired or it isn't.

Mike Anderson wore #38, which is why I selected that particular number. Is there a point to asking that question?By showing that you can't even name a current player who wears that number shows that that isn't what you do in the NFL. Halfbacks wear 20-34, that's it.

He actually got a lot of reps at halfback, which is why I named him, but either way, who cares if another halfback wears that number or not?Official site of the Pittsburgh Steelers - Roster (http://news.steelers.com/team/player/71064/)

Naufahu Tahi got reps at halfback for the Vikings too, doesn't make him one though.

I don't care, I'm just pointing out that halfbacks in the NFL don't wear that number.
