Three days after drafting Chris Wells in the first-round, the Arizona Cardinals finally gave Edgerrin James his release, a source said.
James, who was in the final year of his contract, has been asking for his release since the beginning of the offseason. The Cardinals told him he would stay on the roster until they found his replacement. On Tuesday, the time came for his release.
The 30-year-old James has been with Arizona for three seasons. He rushed for 1,159 yards in 2006 and 1,222 yards in 2007. In 2008, he saw decreased playing time after the Cardinals tried to move Tim Hightower into a more prominent role as a starter.
James had seven starts last season and rushed for 514 yards.

Cardinals also released
Cardinals released CB Roderick Hood.
He became expendable when Arizona added Bryant McFadden. Hood picked off five passes in his first year as a Cardinal before grabbing just one in 2008, and seeming to lose confidence. Still, he's only 27 and could help elsewhere in sub-packages. Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo knows him well from their Philly days. Cardinals released OLB Travis LaBoy.
The Cards guaranteed LaBoy $7.5M on a five-year contract last offseason, so they're taking a salary cap hit. They do have room to work with and needed the cash for Adrian Wilson, Karlos Dansby, and possibly Anquan Boldin's extensions. LaBoy, 28, got off to a hot start with four sacks in the first four games last year, but ran into the same injury woes that dogged him as a Titan. He's a very skilled pass rusher, but can't stay off the shelf. Travis LaBoy (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2788)
I think they are taking a big hit. they need depth i think losing Hood took away alot of depth for that team.

Not a surprise on the James cut, because the writing was on the wall that the Cards wanted to go RB early in the draft, and even with a solid post-season, James was still in the doghouse.
However, I do not agree with releasing Hood. I can see LaBoy, even with the hit they will take on the cap, but Hood is an experienced corner and a very good guy from the nickel spot. With the amount of teams that now run three and four receiver sets, having depth at corner is very important, and losing Hood will hurt this team.

I liked how LaBoy played in the 3-4. I hope the 49ers sign him.

That's releasing crazy money. Hood is a shocker. I know a certain team with stripes on their helmet that should be interested.
