View Full Version : QB Rating System '07: Spartan on the Rise

Wolverine
04-20-2007, 04:34 PM
The ever so popular QB Rating System is back and it's ready to rate this year's bunch of signal callers. Last year I believe Vince Young got a low grade and he made it pay. Now all numbers I come out with are on my opinion on what I've seen and what I've read. I've read 3-4 opinions from different sites and magazines on each QB. The numbers sure do shake out weird this year and you will be surprised at who the top is. The scale is 1-5 and this year I added a 10th category to spice things up and make it even. Here it is.

1. ARM STRENGTH
Based on how deep a QB can throw the ball.

2. ACCURACY
Based on how well a QB can complete the short game and hit receivers.

3. FOOTBALL IQ
Mechanics, the ability to read defenses, play books and not throw interceptions is factored in here.

4. MOBILITY
Make up how well a QB can make a play, create second chances, throw on the run and pocket presence.

5. LEADERSHIP
Based on how well a QB can lead his team.

6. TOUGHNESS
Based on how tough a QB is and durability or past injuries.

7. RESUME
Based on the team they play for and the games they have won in the past.

8. MATURITY
Based on their off the field problems or not problems and how good of a person they are.

9. PEDIGREE
Too many people didn't get a good enough grade on this last year, so it's been expanded to systems played in, coaches played for in addition to family relations.

10. SUPPORTING CAST
Specifically their college career, in this case, the worse your score, the better your teams were.

<table border="1" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="3" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td width="11%">http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/1645/quinnta3.jpg
Brady Quinn
Notre Dame
6-4, 225
NFL Comparison: Tom Brady
</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 5
In terms of JaMarcus Russell no one is better, but his arm strength is very good.
2. ACCURACY - 4
He struggles when you put someone in his face. So he better go to a team that has an offensive line.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 5
He has been in the Charlie Weis system, and as far as smarts go. He has both football smarts and IQ smarts.
4. MOBILITY - 2
Nothing spectacular but he isn't a log back there.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
He plays for Notre Dame. He is the Quarterback. Um you better be a five here.
6. TOUGHNESS - 5
He takes a beating but he always gets back up and fights back. Tough as they come.
7. RESUME' - 3
He has won games, but he hasn't won big games. Couldn't beat USC, got smashed at Michigan, never won a Bowl Game.
8. MATURITY - 5
Stand up guy, gets good grades at a tough school. Heck he has a double major.
9. PEDIGREE - 3
I'm giving him more points that most people on this one because he has Charlie Weis. That's enough for your pedigree
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 1
It's Notre Dame, he has good talent at wide out and a decent line. </td></tr><tr><td width="11%">http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/2174/tsmithsn2.jpg
Troy Smith
Ohio State
6-0, 215
NFL Comparison: Donovan McNabb
</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 5
I'm not sure who said this guy doesn't have a strong arm. If no one didn't my mistake, but I've seen this guy throw the ball on the run.
2. ACCURACY - 5
He threw what, 6 Picks last year? He is very efficient and very accurate.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 3
Does he have the ability to break down a defense? Can he run a West Coast Offense? I wonder because I think that's the offense he fits best in.
4. MOBILITY - 5
He didn't show it last year but he can play with those college defenses while on the move. He has used his mobility last year to benefit his passing game, by giving his team a second chance and throwing outside the pocket.
5. LEADERSHIP - 4
I don't question his leadership, he obviously has it at Ohio State. But he had to work for it. It doesn't come natural to him.
6. TOUGHNESS - 4
I don't think hard as nails but the kid is mentality tough.
7. RESUME' - 5
He came up dry on the National Title category, but his team deserves just as much blame as he does. He beat Michigan to the ground as the favorite, the underdog and the equal. Nothing tops that.
8. MATURITY - 5
Troy Smith has come a long way in this section. Two years ago he might have been a 2 or a 3. Sweater vest has turned him into a good human being.
9. PEDIGREE - 4
Ted Ginn Sr. is like his dad. And Ted Ginn Sr is a coach at one of the best High Schools in Ohio. Ted Ginn Sr took him in. Not to mention he has brothers that played football, I'd say it's safe to say he deserves a high mark here.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 1
Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez, Santonio Holmes, stellar offensive lineman. Hey now.
</td></tr><tr><td width="11%">http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/545/russellwe9.jpg
JaMarcus Russell
Louisiana State
6-6, 258
NFL Comparison: Daunte Culpepper
</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 5
I wish I could give him a six here.
2. ACCURACY - 4
While he has the ability to throw the football into outer space he might not hit the moon every time.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 4
He played in a good system, but like Troy Smith, can he run any type of system as well as say Brady Quinn?
4. MOBILITY - 5
He is Daunte Culpepper-pre knee injuries. Hell he might be bigger and stronger than C-Pep.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
Natural Born Leader.
6. TOUGHNESS - 4
I don't really know what to tell you here.
7. RESUME' - 3
He won a bowl game to close out his career, he had a good final season. But he has had trouble winning big games in the past and mainly throwing picks in big spots.
8. MATURITY - 5
From what I can see a very well rounded individual.
9. PEDIGREE - 2
Okay
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 1
Great receivers, talented backs. He played in a very good system at LSU.</td></tr><tr><td width="11%">http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/9539/stantonie7.jpg

NFL Comparison: Ben Roethlisberger
</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 5
He is right up there with all the others.
2. ACCURACY - 4
He has struggled a times. He struggles with pressure.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 5
Very bright kid.
4. MOBILITY - 4
He can move around and create second chances, but he needs to learn how to use his speed better.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
He is what you want in a Quarterback.
6. TOUGHNESS - 5
Stanton took an absolute beating at Michigan State. He never gave up even when it was hopeless.
7. RESUME' - 3
This isn't his fault because he has put his team in position to win plenty of games. They can't come through for him though.
8. MATURITY - 5
Stand up guy. Didn't pout when his team was down.
9. PEDIGREE - 2
John L Smith was his coach.... He doesn't really have a background.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 5
His supporting cast was horrible. Plain and Simple. </td></tr><tr><td width="11%">http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/4557/edwardsob9.jpg

Nothing spectacular but he can get the job done.
2. ACCURACY - 4
Accurate and has a great throwing motion.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 2
He is a smart guy but he has trouble with the NFL curriculum.
4. MOBILITY - 4
He can move around and make plays on his feet. He has that second chance ability that is very valuable to a QB now a days.
5. LEADERSHIP - 4
He is a smart guy, I'm sure he can figure out this part.
6. TOUGHNESS - 3
He has had injury troubles in the past. Durability is a problem.
7. RESUME' - 2
Stanford could barely win games. Wasn't his fault but it impacts this rating.
8. MATURITY - 5
Comes from a good school academically, and is a great kid.
9. PEDIGREE - 1
Blank
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 5
This guy played for Stanford. Enough said.

Pittsburgh
6-2, 218
NFL Comparison: Sage Rosenfels

</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 4
Not great but he has a decent arm.
2. ACCURACY - 3
He has erratic mechanics that doesn't give him an edge in this one.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 4
He has what it takes to command his offense and guide them.
4. MOBILITY - 3
He can move around and get out of the pocket.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
Tops in the leader category. This is what will make him a great backup in the NFL.
6. TOUGHNESS - 5
He can hang with the best of them. Pair this with leadership and it's as valuable as everything esle.
7. RESUME' - 3
Hasn't won much. Had a down junior year after leading Pitt to the Fiesta Bowl.
8. MATURITY - 5
Great kid.
9. PEDIGREE - 3
He comes from a long line of Pitt QBs. He may not have bloodlines, but Pittsburgh has a past of churning out some talent at the position.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 3
Okay talent. Nothing special, but nothing horrible.

2. ACCURACY - 3
Not the most accurate guy, but he is smart about it.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 5
Wonderlic be damned he is smart and smart on the field.
4. MOBILITY - 3
Isn't fast, but isn't slow. He can move around enough.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
He played all 4 years at Florida and earned the respect of his team.
6. TOUGHNESS - 4
Once again a 4 year starter who seemed to play forever.
7. RESUME' - 5
Won a National Title...
8. MATURITY - 5
He has evolved into a guy you need to have on your team.
9. PEDIGREE - 5
Had a brother play QB for the Vols.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 1
Ridiculous talent surrounding him in his last year.

Jordan Palmer
Texas El-Paso
6-5, 232
NFL Comparison: Vinny Testeverde
</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 3
Nothing to rave about
2. ACCURACY - 3
He is okay but his interception to TD ratio is not good. In his career 11 to 8.
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 3
Again he throws too many Interceptions, which leads me to believe he is lacking somewhere.
4. MOBILITY - 2
Isn't a brick but he won't move around
5. LEADERSHIP - 4
Lead a decent UTEP squad to bowl games and was a captain.
6. TOUGHNESS - 4
Played for UTEP and probably took a beating at points. Played games all four years.
7. RESUME' - 3
He was there when UTEP made its way out of the woodwork. Mike Price deserves most of the credit but Jordan Palmer was instrumental.
8. MATURITY - 5
If he is anything like his brother then he is good to go.
9. PEDIGREE - 5
I think that brother he has is pretty good.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 4
It's UTEP, not horrible but he didn't exactly have major talent.

Smart guy on and off the field.
4. MOBILITY - 4
He is a very athletic guy and can make plays if he has to.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
Lead Houston for 4 years and can lead a team willingly.
6. TOUGHNESS - 5
Once again he played in Houston for 4 years since he was a freshman. I remember his first game against Michigan. He took a beating.
7. RESUME' - 4
He has put together quite the career. Not quite David Klingler but hey.
8. MATURITY - 5
Model for all the team to follow.
9. PEDIGREE - 2
Doesn't really have any connections to football.
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 3
Houston. Okay. But he played in a pass friendly system that really benefited him. This category typically helps smaller school QBs, but not for him.

He can move around and get a second chance.
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
He has the poise and experience to lead a team.

7. RESUME' - 3
Once again he played in a very friendly system at BYU. They won some games though and did in a lot of good teams.

Like most BYU players he is older than all college Quarterbacks, and he is very mature.

What he has in strength he doesn't have in accuracy.

He only has been a QB for 2 years, and he may have a tough time being one in the NFL.
4. MOBILITY - 5
A multi-sport athlete who got drafted in baseball last year and can move around in the pocket probably better than anyone in the class.
5. LEADERSHIP - 4
He showed a lot of poise for the Huskies this year. A big reason in their surprising 06 campaign.
6. TOUGHNESS - 1
He has injury issues.

</td><td bgcolor="#c1c1c1" width="89%">1. ARM STRENGTH - 2
He simply doesn't have the big arm
2. ACCURACY - 3
He can be okay but he needs time
3. FOOTBALL IQ - 3
Badgers did a lot of running, he didn't get to really expand
4. MOBILITY - 1
Yeah he is a bit of a statue
5. LEADERSHIP - 5
He is going to become a great backup because of this. Look at the guy he succeeded, Jim Sorgi.
6. TOUGHNESS - 4
He is pretty tough but he has a durability issue
7. RESUME' - 4
He simply won games with the Badgers
8. MATURITY - 5
With that he is a good kid
9. PEDIGREE - 2
He comes from a line of Wisconsin Quarterbacks that are not expected to do much..
10. SUPPORTING CAST - 1
Wisconsin had talented teams around him. Period

MISSING THE CUT
These Signal Callers didn't make the cut for this year's QB Rating System

THE RUN DOWN
Drew Stanton 43
Troy Smith 41
Kevin Kolb 41
Chris Leak 40
Justin Rascati 38
Tyler Palko 38
Brady Quinn 38
JaMarcus Russell 38
Jared Zabranksy 37
Jeff Rowe 36
Jordan Palmer 36
James Pinkney 36
Matt Guiterrez 35
Josh Swogger 35
John Beck 35
Trent Edwards 34
Luke Getsy 34
Matt Moore 33
Drew Tate 32
Toby Korrodi 31
Issiah Stanback 31
John Stocco 30
Lester Ricard 23

Whats left to say after tallying up the numbers? WOW. According to the Rating System Drew Stanton is the best QB to be had in this years draft, Lester Ricard is worthless and the Quinn Russell debate is still a tie. Infact they are worth the same as Justin Rascati and Tyler Palko.

Now it's obvious that the total numbers are probably off. A big factor was the new category I added, Supporting cast. I thought it would give a fewer of the other guys a chance. The formula is far from perfect but this should create some debate and really give everyone a second thought at who is worth it this year.

i like it. i think stanton could be really good-hopefully some one like the Jags with talented WRs and backfield along with a QB controversy takes him and gives him a shot. i always liked the kid.

nice work too

You're missing a big factor in these rankings my dear friend, there's a reason not many 6' quarterbacks start and succeed in the NFL right now, and that is, well, SIZE!!!

Seriously, a guy who's 5'11 right now with perfect everything else would be your top ranked guy, when in real life, he's getting drafted behind and probably playing not so good as guys who are 6'1 or better.

BTW, here's a list of the starting quarterbacks in the NFL right now who are at 6' or under:

Drew Brees

One out of 32. Height's a factor.

Yeah And those are just the ones that might get drafted or picked up. The ones i listed in the last box are the other ones that probably won't even get a look.

If you are trying to get the highest score here why does supporting cast work on the opposite scaling? I mean if arm strength is great and gets a 5 out of 5, but the supporting cast is excellent why should it get a 1 to be the best instead of 5? If you take someone who has a crappy/poor arm, gets a 1, but has a great supporting cast, and gets a 1 there,(2) versus someone who has a great arm, gets a 5 and had a crappy cast, gets 5 there thats 10 points versus 2 points. I think it's a little overvaluing. If you ride the same scale the entire way, a great arm (5) and a bad cast(1) gets you 6. A bad arm (1) and a great cast (5) gets you 6 as well.

I guess I can see it a little bit by valuing the arm more(obviously it's a quarterback) but if there's no wide outs to catch the ball from the great arm, or any runningbacks to help take the load off, it voids out the arm.

Also why does Getsy get a 2 for pedigree?

Okay let me put it to you this way.

How is it fair to someone like.. Trent Edwards if his Supporting Cast is horrible? When Troy Smith has 40 receivers that could be a starter on any other college team.

The supporting cast works opposite because if your team is better, that might mean you are a little better. If your team is worse, then maybe you are a little better than some people would think.

As for Getsy getting a 2 on pedigree.. I dont have a clue. I guess you can take one off.. Oversight..

Go Tyler Palko! Just because I like the NFL comparison :)

Where did you get the comparisons? Chris Leak's comparison is David Garrard? What? Garrard is known because of his legs, something that Chris Leak is not. Leak is a much better passer than Garrard, but can't really change a game by running. I would also say that he is a very accurate passer. I would give him a 4-5 on accuracy and a 3 MAX on arm strength. He can't hurl it down field like the Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell and Troy Smith's of this class. I think a 4 is way too generous.

Very in depth analysis and great article. Even my homer self would say that putting Leak at #4 is pretty crazy. :)

I think Romo compares better to Jared Zabransky than John Beck. Just like Romo Jared's mobile and is able to roll out when the pocket collapses. I think John Beck compares better to Phillip Rivers or Alex Smith b/c he basically will be the one to sit in the pocket and when the o-line collapses he's going with it.

I know this is a bit delayed, but you gave Korrodi a "3" in arm strength when he probably has among the 5 strongest arms in this draft. That's the majority of his appeal... he zings the ball--hard (or so I've been told).
