For the first time ever PSH will elect their own winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy to one collegiate football player. Over the season a "Heisman Hype" Meter was conducted giving the members of PSH an idea what the members of our panel would vote. Well now it's time to cast the official ballot and award the Heisman Trophy to the Nation's BEST College Football Player.

Reggie Nelson and Paul Thompson make it over players like P.J. Hill, Garrett Wolfe, Brady Quinn, Jamarcus Russell, and Calvin Johnson? :nono:

Everyone but Russell got votes heading into this week.. but when it was all said and done none of them got any votes among the 6 voters. Two felt that those guys deserved it..

PJ Hill and Garrett Wolfe both saw a dip in their numbers down the stretch of the season; I campaigned for PJ early on, but he simply didn't finish strong enough, plus he's a freshman. Jamarcus Russell probably could've gotten more press than he has, but with Quinn, Thompson and Brennan ahead of him at QB, not to mention Troy Smith, there just wasn't room for him. Thompson's performance in the Big 12 title game got him the nod from me. Oklahoma really got hosed this year; they should have been in the Glendale debate with Florida and Michigan, but the refs screwed them in Oregon and that wasn't possible. Add that to the fact that he had to lead his team despite losing the best RB in the nation for half the season, and I'm amazed he hasn't gotten more buzz. This guy was a WR last year, played a little QB and looked awful, but came in when there was absolutely no other option this year and put up outstanding numbers. I think he's very deserving of mention in this debate.

Brady Quinn couldn't help the fact that ND's defense was porus, but when your team gets embarassed like the Irish did against elite competition, you don't deserve as much credit as Quinn's gotten. A lot of people can put up numbers against Army and Stanford. When it boils down, Quinn wasn't able to win the big games for his team, while Thompson and Smith did. It's about winning, not draft potential. That's why the other two QBs got my nod over Quinn.

Calvin Johnson really should've been the winner this year; he's the best weapon on any team in the entire nation. Unfortunately, he plays with arguably the most frustrating QB in the nation. It really speaks to Johnson's character, IMO, that he's remained quiet and composed despite the fact that Reggie Ball has been unable to get him the ball the way he should for much of the season. It's hard for a WR to win this award, and it's really hard if your QB can't complete more than 50% of his passes.

I think this is a very good list overall; PSH did a better job than the real voters probably will, if history is any indicator.

For the record, I am the Reggie Nelson vote. I love Garrett Wolfe, and he is deserving in many ways, but he really fell off the map later in the season with bad outings against weak competition. Calvin Johnson did not have the statistical strength to compliment his enormous physical abilities. PJ Hill was more impressive statistically than he was visually (opinion, I know, but it's my opinion and I voted). Brady Quinn had great numbers against weak teams, with a couple nice comebacks, but he didn't merit being considered "the most outstanding player in college football," in my opinion due to his bouts of inconsistency.

Reggie Nelson was the best player on a great defense that led a great team. He has played well all season, while I was oblivious to it due to my tv coverage. I finally got to see him play in Florida's last two games and I found him deserving of all the hype he has received, and I do not think that the Hiesman should be limited to QBs, RBs and the occasional CB/WR+return man. Nelson had an excellent season and may have been the best defensive player in football this season--and I think that's worth a vote as the most outstanding player in college football this season.

I would have loved to find a spot for Wolfe on my ballot, but it was pretty full. Other than that, I have no regrets and make no apologies. I think Smith, McFadden and Hart are clearly three of the very best players in college football this year, I found Nelson deserving... after that it was a bit of a tosss-up between the smaller-time RBs with outstanding years; I picked Johnson over Rice and Wolfe... but it could have been either one.

I can understand making an argument FOR players left off as several players had excellent seasons this year, as always... but I don't think it's very easy to make an argument against any of the five I chose. (Smith, McFadden, Hart, Johnson, Nelson)

Who was on the panel?

Well as you know Schaddy voted on this one and myself.. If anyone else want's to reveal themselves they may, but it's up to them :)

The funny thing in all this.. Johnson and Brennan probably won't get invites.. Quinn will and he will probably finish second. The media loves ND and well there are way more ND heisman winners that can vote on it than there were on this.. We will see how the real deal shakes out compared to ours.

I'm on the panel and no I wasn't the Reggie Nelson voter. I'm not gonna lie though, I was so tempted to put him on the list, but didn't want to be labeled a homer.

He has 6 picks and 2 blocked kicks. The pick total is a little deceiving because he had at least 2 more where he drilled the guy and the ball popped into the air for Ryan Smith and Tony Joiner to get the pick.

Don't worry, Gators... I already fessed to the Nelson vote. I knew I had to or else everyone would assume it was you... but I'm also a little surprised you didn't put him yourself; get him out of last place, haha

Well I voted before you and I couldn't really change my vote. :nono: If Reggie does not win the Thorpe award, it is BS.
