Senior Bowl: Quarterback Report

The 6 Quarterbacks playing the senior bowl are a group of guys that I show much intrest in. Being a person who thinks he knows Quarterbacks and Widereceivers well I decided to dig into them. I'll start things off by going into a report on the 6 QBs: Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt, Charlie Whitehurst of Clemson, Michael Robinson of Penn State, D.J. Shockley of Georgia, Darrell Hackney of Alabama-Birmingham, and Brodie Croyle of Alabama. All interesting prospects. Two might not even be Quarterbacks and one could be the odd man out in a draft dominated by Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

What's there to say bad about Jay Cutler? The kid carried Vanderbilt in his Senior year. Cutler is going to make the case for several teams out of the top 3 that are looking for a young quarterback to stear their ship. Teams like the Lions and Dolphins are looking to choose Cutler to be their signal caller for the future. Cutler has impressed the scouts at the Senior Bowl this week and is by far the best Quarterback in Mobile, infact "experts" like Chris Mortensen have gone as far as saying that he is the best Quarterback available in the draft come this April. Here's the great thing about Jay potentially all his weaknesses are things that can be found in most Rookies in the NFL. We all know that the things Rookie's struggle with are fixable. Mechanics, Decision Making, and polishing up a little on when to make the right throw. With the right Coach to lead him he can put the extra qualities that he has and combine them into a Quarterback Machine. He has great confidence in himself, so much that some say he might have TOO much confidence. He can make a solid throw on the run and he has a strong arm. He does have to learn how to throw use it though. His intangibles are unbelieveable. He has the size and mobility to create plays on the run and keep the play alive, and create extra chances for his team. Cutler is deffinatly showing scouts at the Senior Bowl that he can play at the next level, and with a good QB Guru at this side he can be a GREAT Starter in the NFL.

Comparison: Seneca Wallace, QB Seahawks
Poor Accuracy, with a Good Arm. He is instinctive but that's with the football tucked and beyond the Line of Scrimmage. Micheal Robinson isn't going to go far as a Quarterback in the NFL. He has a strong arm but that won't get you anywhere unless you can aim the cannon. He can make plays on the run but once again its 90% of his feet and 10% of his arm. Robinson has to transform into a Receiver to play in the NFL and he has the committment to do that. He is willing to play anywhere because the kid just wants to play. He has all the attitude you want in a quarterback but not the skills to get it done. He can mold himself into a team leader but it will have to be at Receiver. Robinson has made some impressions on coaches like Norm Chow and Craig Johnson. Johnson has said "He has shown he can lead the team. If guys are looking for a run-pass type, he has been accurate enough and has made big plays in big games." Some see Robinson as a Quarterback, I personally don't. But I see him as a firey guy that you want on your team in some position. Slot/4th Receiver, Special Teamer. Robinson's personality is deffinately valuable.

Comparison: Ben Roethlisberger, QB Steelers
The more and more I read about him and the more and more I look at him I think of Roethlisberger. The size, the not amazing but sufficent mobility. He adapts to the situation around him, dealing with 3 different offensive coaches in his 3 different years. He can come right in and learn the system quickly. If there is one guy that is ready to assume control of a NFL team it could be Charlie Whitehurst. Maybe in a Kyle Orton type role, someone who isn't depended apon but someone who can learn the ways of the offense and just protect the football. His experience is valuable and all the stuff that is wrong with him is skills that need to be developed. He has to learn to better adapt with pressure and make a better decision. His devlievery is something to be admired. It's high and hes 6'4" so it's gonna be awfuly hard to disrupt his throwing lane. That's a big advantage. Charlie can be a player in this league, he just needs the right coaching and the right leadership. Maybe one consistant offensive coach would be a good thing for him.

Comparison: Michael Vick, QB Falcons
What is there to be said about Shockley? He has a great arm, he can make plays with his feet. Seems like the flavor of the month mobile quarterback that people will love. Heres the thing. Hes raw. He hasn't been a starter till this year, and even then it all went south when he got injured. Shockley has a lot to learn so there is still hope for him as a Quarterback, more hope than Michael Robinson. But still eventually being a Receiver might be the best move. He is a Quarterback though. Quarterback mentality and Quarterback mind. He suffers from Mike Vick Syndrome. He tends to take off too quickly and he cannot use his strong arm to connect on passes like others can. The beatings he takes compares him to Mike Vick the most, He runs too much and takes too many hits, it all goes back to making better decisions and staying in the pocket or staying on the throwing side of the Line of Scrimmage longer. His intangibles lack but he is a smart player who can fix his problems. Shockley could be a Quarterback in the NFL. But he is a project who could take just as long as Mike Vick is taking to be a guy who can throw the football. It might be too much of a project for the simple fact that he lacks the experience and doesn't have that time under his belt.

Comparison: Dante Culpepper, QB Vikings
I've been high on Darrell Hackney since last year. He has that large build that Culpepper has. Not the mobility of Dante but he has quick feet that allows him to move around and shake off defenders combined with his size and body strength. He is a confident leader that could use some good coaching to make him a quaterback. His arm is something to marvel at. He can make any throw on the field that you ask him to make. He does have to make better decisions but that comes with coaching and discipline. Hackney needs a little tough love to straighten him out and get his football skills in check. Theres no doubt in my mind he can be a NFL Quarterback but it's gonna take a good Quarterback teacher and some time to develope under a Veteran Quarterback that can show him the ropes. The wrong place could send his career south, but the right could make it sky rocket. He has the Quarterback skills to make it but someone has to teach him how to use them. A good Senior Bowl game could open up a few eyes on just how good Darrell Hackney could be.

Comparison: Chad Pennington, QB Jets
I don't know why more people don't like Brodie Croyle. I am very high on the kid for these reasons. So many scout reports I've read havn't given a concern other than injuries. Sure he needs some experience because of those injuries, but Croyle should be considered to be a right up there with the other QBs. I would deffinately take him as a second round talent any day of the week. A leader, he can make throws, and at the Senior Bowl he showed great zip on his passes. Brodie can make the decisions and make the throws, and I see no reason to handicap him because of his injury problems. He played this year and led Alabama to their best season in a while. Like I said I am high on Brodie Croyle and what he can bring to the table, He has the Talent, the Arm, the Attitude to be a Quarterback in the NFL. Don't let the injuries scare you on his feet. He may not be able to create his own plays but he isn't a statue. Upside and potential is high on Brodie and he needs a place that will give him that chance. Whoever takes the note on him and grabs him is gonna be one happy team.

I know alot of sources round up on the height, Cutler is actually 6'2 7/8. Not a huge deal except that if he really was 6'4 he'd be really close on Leinarts heels right now. More than he actually is anyway, Leinart better take his butt to the combine.

Leinart better take his butt to the combine.
He will. A lot of guys view this as something like the Pro Bowl. Everybody knows how good Lienart is so why risk getting hurt or having your stock fall?
