Hall of Fame Selection should be changed
The Hall of Fame is a very special place. It is holy ground for we the football fans. I have never been there but plan on going there some time in the future.
My beef with the Hall of Fame is not a new one, heck its been debated for years. I am talking about the Hall of Fame selection process. It is there to make sure that the people nominated are deserving and just. But I believe this same process keeps out as many if not more as it should let in as well. Let's look at the process in general.
http://www.pigskinheaven.com/gallery/files/7/pk9fj.gifIt is a panel of 39 member board. One for each NFL city, New York has 2 because it has 2 teams, and there are 6 at large members as well and one from the Pro Football Writers Association. These members are all media related. From newspapers to ESPN and so on. With the exception of the PFWA representative who is appointed for a two-year term the rest are annual. They meet around the time of the super bowl is played, To elect new members to the Hall. There is no maximum number that can be elected although the Hall requires that at least 3-6 be elected each year out of 15 semi-finalists. There's is more to it than this but in a nut shell that is it. For a nominee to make it in the Hall they must have 80% of the votes. This is where things get messed up.
80% of the votes is the magic number. What really bugs me about this process is the players and coaches left out year after year. John Madden should have been there many years ago this time around he should get in, maybe. Randy Gradishar of the Denver Broncos was as important to the Orange Crush defense as Mike Singletary was to the Chicago Bears monsters of the mid-way defense, Randy is not there but Mike is.
On and on there are so many that should have been in the hall and for some especially before they die. It is a terible shame to make these people wait for years and some pass on before they are finally realized or their greatness. It makes me wonder what they consider good enough to make it in.
They select from the modern era and Seniors(pre 1981). They wanted at least 2 Seniors to be voted on each year because some have been overlooked for years and years, well at least they tried something to change this process.
http://www.pigskinheaven.com/gallery/files/7/DisplayNFLSHIELDcl_938071.gifWe all believe Reggie White and Troy Aikman will get in easliy, no one can argue the minister of defense, a supreme player. Troy is a great one too and deserves it as well. But the 15 finalists selected out of 112, yes 112! There were 97 that didn't make it to the semi-final's. Players, coaches and owners. Players like Fred Dean, Irving Friar, Andre Tippett, Reggie Roby, Clay Matthews, Ed "TO TALL" Jones on and on. Unreal. I just keep scratching my head about this. At least some of the ones are considered this time around like Ken Stabler, Richard Dent, Art Monk, LC Greenwood, Ray Guy and more, I belive most of the 15 finalists should be in the Hall. How long should it take is the question.
I believe something should be done to speed up the process of getting those that deverve to be there in there. Well I know the argument is "well if they aren't in there by now they shouldn't be there" I believe this is wrong and should be changed. I don't know what could be done to make this better for all involved but providing a easier root for some "old timers" would be a good start. Special teamers year in and year out are always left out, most of you http://www.pigskinheaven.com/gallery/files/7/punt8nm.gifyoung guys don't remember a punter named Ray Guy, by far the best punter the game has ever seen, he's not in, not yet, maybe this year an injustice will be corrected.
What does a member of the HoF board use to determine his vote? They each have all the carreer stats and biographies in front of them when they sit down to decide. I wonder if a modern player has an advantage over the old timers because they are fresher in peoples mind? How Good or bad the player is off the field shouldn't be a consideration, the HoF is about what they did on the field of football. But we'll see if that reflects on Michael Irvin this time around, at least he is one of "them" in the media, hopefully for his sake he made friends and not enemies while working for ESPN.
There may not be a fool proof system for electing new members in the HoF, and I guess it is something that we will have to live with. I don't like having all these great players that busted their rear-ends on the field, waiting and waiting and some dying before they are selected, there is something inherited wrong with that process. There are some players that are going to be eligible next year and in the near future that will be overlooked and will be placed in the "pasture of the forgotten" like all the other's, it may not mean to them as much as it does to me or other people but right is right and wrong is wrong in my eye's and there is no in between. The selection process needs to be updated and/or changed to make it a more fair to everyone involved. That way we'll get to see the person selected and not a famliy member there on their behalf.
I know each of us think a certain player should be there. We all have our own Ideas on what is great and certain player's we like and hate and that is why there will always be debate on who is deserving for the HoF, nothing will change that, we are no different than the ones who really decide the fate of our beloved player's except we don't have the option of saying " yes, this one is great" and casting the vote.
