Defensive Rankings
http://img279.imageshack.us/img279/6229/pshlogo1052qx.jpg

Ahhh, week nine never looked so fine. This week we saw a little stutter step from some teams in the win loss column, as far as the defensive rankings we are begining to see the cream rise to the top. Some surprises are the Bears, hey Crunky himself pegged them to be 9-7 on the shoulders of the defense but I must admit when Grossman went down I really doubted they could win 7, and technically they havent yet;): THe Cowboys, are riding high as they continue the third straight week of climbing the charts, Demarcus Ware is the real deal and Parcells and company hit that nail right on the head with that selection (Crunked remembers being puzzled by the choice on draft day).

Lets talk submariners, please see the Rams and the Chiefs defenses, and the Patriots have fallen 3 weeks straight as well. Three teams that in the pre-season I would have pegged to be in the top half of the league find themselves in the bottom half. Okay enough yapping lets see the list.

(*) included this week the official half way point, where your team ranks defensively by NFL standards in Purple!

The Bucs run yardage per game took a big hit on Sunday, I have a feeling it's gonna take another big hit this week also.

At least the 49ers are getting better in all the categories.. they dropped 24 total yards off their average from last week.

The Bucs are wavering there at the #1 spot each week they get closer to being bumped, every time I thought they were going to go the teams around them do poorly too, sooner or later they wont be so lucky

I'm surprised at the Colts myself. The defense isn't that bad.

Giants shedded a good amount from last week, but they only gained like one spot lol

I'm not sure how they tabulated the rankings.

But they're definitely severely flawed. The AFC West is all grossly underranked.

You would give up a lot of yards too, with the schedule they've played. The AFC West features the best offenses in the league. To boot, the teams they've played outside their division are mostly the NFC East, which you could also argue are the best offenses in the league.

If it's in the cards, then the high averages will come back down, but the numbers don't lie.

Numbers never lie. But they often don't account for a whole lot of truths.

And from what I see, these numbers don't account whatsoever for the calibre of offenses that a defense has faced. The Bengals are the perfect example. Hard to put a defense at #4 when the highest ranked offense they've faced is ranked #14, and that didn't even happen until last week.

Its kind of decieving but they gained alot of ground statistically you are right, if they can string a few decent to good games together they are now more in a position to move up the food chain, instead of setting at the bottom looking up, statistically speaking.

actually strength of schedule is factored in, based on an opponents offensive ranking.

Thanks for the clarification.

I do find it odd, then, that Cincy is ranked so high. They've only faced on top 20 offense, and 0 top 10 offenses. Which leads me to believe that strength of schedule wasn't a huge factor.

And seeing that the AFC West is loaded so far down (Oakland and KC, while not being powerhouse defenses, should really not be below the Rams, Cardinals, Titans, and Packers--particualrly with the Rams, Cardinals, and Packers, they're playing lower-tiered offenses and still giving up a ton of points. The Raiders/Chiefs, on the other hand, aren't giving up any more yards or points than anyone else in the league is).

No system is perfect, so I appreciate your insight on this. But I'm sure a lot of people can guess that I am a HUGE strength of schedule advocate, especially in this league where there are 2 loaded divisions and 2 divisions that should be sent back to college football.

Well said, and you are right no system is perfect...including this one, and yes strength of schedule is not the "highest consideration" but I would like to point out the Rams are where they are BASED on strength of schedule (which btw I also factor in mathematically if they won or lost and how many yards surrendered to a given opponent) anyway the Rams statistically without strength of schedule factored in at all would be 29th for example, so this is a formula I assess and tweak each year, so I do try to watch what positively and negatively effects movement and rectify those issues if I can.

News from our players and the coaches is that through the bye week the pass defense really got themselves together and are beginning to set so I wouldnt be surprised if the panthers become top 5 by the end of the year.

Well Razzy if they can translate that onto the field in any meaningful way they will move up ye ole food chain, that is the only thing keeping them from being a feared D.
