The Steelers looked pretty good in their win against the Eagles Monday Night. I wanted to do pretty much what Petey did for the Bengals, only I will do it for the Steelers.

The Good

Hines Ward on the sideline:

Seeing Hines on the sideline was a very pleasent suprise. Even though I didn't agree with his holding out, I said that I still liked him. The fact that he came to the game even though he wasn't going to play really adds some points back in the "Team Player" aspect. I'm glad to see that he is planning on strapping up the pads again.

The Steelers' Defense:

The Steelers' Defense looked very good. Although they gave up more points than I would want, there was a good reason for that (it will be mentioned later). Not only did they return an INT for a TD, they also looked very comfortable out there to me. I think that the Steelers defense for the most part - especially their starters - looked as though they would pick up where they left off.

Special Teams:

The offense managed to get a 21-7 lead without scoring a point. This was done from 2 great returns by Ricardo Colclough and Ike Taylor. Ricardo had a 66 yard TD return off of a punt, and Ike had a 100 yard kickoff return for a TD. These two plays gave the Steelers a comfortable lead to work with, and put the Eagles down early.

[b]The Bad

Ben Roethlisberger:

This wasn't actually "Bad" as much as "Scary." Of Ben's 2 incomplete passes, both of them were very close to being picked. One of them was thrown over his reciever's hands, and Brian Dawkins missed an easy catch, then Antwaan Randle El missed a catchable ball and it bounced off of the Corner's hands. My heart stopped watching these passes bounce off of the Eagles defender's hands.

The Secondary:

Even though the Secondary had an INT for a TD, I thought they looked terrible. The Steelers didn't have to go up against the Eagles' Top 3 WR's from last year (Owens, Mitchell, Pinkston) yet they still left Recievers wide open and couldn't seem to stop the Eagle's passing game. I'm sure that they're are excuses like they were playing zone, they may not have been going 100% because it was only preseason, but they should still have been able to stop the Eagle's scrub WR's.

[b]The Suprising

Fred Gibson:

Fred Gibson looked very good for the time that he was in the game. He only had 1 catch for 11 yards, but because it's preseason and you don't get much playing time, you can't really look at numbers. He made a very athletic play to try to catch a bad pass, but he couldn't quite come up with it. He also made a very nice block on a pass play. The block he layed on the Eagle will be on "Jacked Up" without a doubt. He looked like a mini Hines Ward - who would have been on this list if he wasn't already on "The Good".

Non-Offensive Scoring:

The Steelers' Offense found themselves with a 21-7 lead without scoring a point. I was very impressed with the "Big Play" ability of the Defense and Special Teams. Those big plays are what wins you big gamesor close games. They showed me that they can win football games without scoring on offense, which makes me feel good. The non offense looked very good and were a big part of this win.

Nate Washington:

Another Wide Reciever that looked very good. In his limited time, he had 4 catches for 76 yards. He looked pretty good to me. This may just be wishful thinking, but he looks like he could really prosper into a great Wide Reciever. Having Hines on the sideline may have opened doors to these young Wide Recievers.

[b]Conclusion

I thought that it ended up being a good game to watch. In previous years, I didn't really like the preseason, but I've come to enjoy being able to see how these younger players will do when put on the field. The game came out being a good, close game - which I always enjoy. Not only was the game a close one, the Steelers came out on top. I thought that the Steelers looked pretty good. There wasn't much to complain about, other than the play by the Secondary. I really enjoyed watching the game and thought that it was pretty exciting. Hope the rest of the Steelers games turn out to be about the same way.
