Intriguing frame at nearly 6'5 295 with long arms....Outstanding motor, plays to the whistle chases plays down the field....He actually makes me wonder if the film doesn't do him justice, he may have been asked to do some things that may make him look inconsistent staying home and shadowing at the line of scrimmage, the motor he shows chasing down plays and getting after the passer makes me wonder if what appears to be an inconsistent effort, may actually be a by-product of him being a team player and simply playing with exceptional discipline, if this is the case, David Carter could end up being a big time steal late in this draft, Rahim Moore claims that his production dipped because of what he was asked to do in this defensive system, granted he's a free safety, but perhaps the UCLA defensive system doesn't allow certain positions to flash and produce....one aspect where the film doesn't lie though is that he plays way too high and seems to have no clue when it comes to leverage....actually has developed a decent array of pass rush moves with a good push/pull and an outstanding swim move, can get up the field once he's engaged uses his hands exceptionally well and jsut seems to be a slippery guy getting after the quarterback....presents way too big a target for NFL guards to get into his body and drive him backward....was on the ground far too much for a player of his dimensions, needs to lower his pad level to survive at the next level, plain and simple...looked like he was asked to do a lot of gap control and shadowing at the line of scrimmage but came hard and relentlessly when he was sent loose...Flashed enough talent at the East West shrine game both in the game and during the practice week to intrigue some NFL team in the late rounds...His frame would suggest he could put on 25 or 30 pounds, if he can do that and learn to play with an even acceptable pad level he could be run stuffing defensive tackle in a 4-3 or nose tackle in a 3-4, but it will take an awful lot of coaching...doesn't have the speed or quickness to move outside in the 4-3 though he could be an interesting 5 technique end in a 3-4, seems to play with enough discipline and uses his hands well enough to man that spot as a rotational guy and produce for you...if you're going to pick a project, why not pick one with a frame like his, and hands like his? So often you hear rookie d-linemen come to camp and the coaches complain that they don't have a clue how to use their hands to disengage from blockers, in this respect, David is ahead of the game....Has good bloodlines as well, Brother is Chris Carter, a defensive end/outside linebacker prospect from Fresno State who is one of my favorite pass rushers in this draft, they actually have some similarities in their games as both play with tremendous motor and both use their hands very well rushing the passer...... NOTE: I COULD NOT GIVE THIS PLAYER A PLUS OR MINUS GRADE WHEN IT CAME TO TECHNIQUE BECAUSE WHILE HE USES HIS HANDS TO DISENGAGE AS WELL AS ANY DEFENSIVE TACKLE IN THIS DRAFT, HIS PAD LEVEL AND USE OF LEVERAGE IS SIMPLY TOO POOR TO GIVE A POSITIVE GRADE.
