NFL Draft Center - 2012 Mock Draft: Some surprises for Halloween - Pigskin Heaven

Welcome to the PSH Draft Center!

  1. The draft order is based on the current draft order as it is laid out on the site.
  2. Round 1
  3. 1. Miami Dolphins - Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Finally the heir apparent to Dan Marino a little over a decade after his retirement. The bigger question is who Luck's coach would be if the Dolphins get the #1 pick.
  4. 2. Indianapolis Colts - Matt Kalil, OT, Southern California
It is unclear how long Peyton Manning will be the quarterback of the Colts, but by taking Kalil, they have a fantastic set up to protect Manning or anyone else that would give them a premier left tackle in the mold of Joe Thomas, move Costanzo to right tackle, and move Ben Ijalana to guard, giving the Colts what should be quite possibly the best pass blocking offensive line in the league.
  5. 3. Arizona Cardinals - Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
The Arizona Cardinals offensive line is embarrassing allowing Kevin Kolb to be sacked 6 times and hit another 8 this week against the Ravens. They have got to find a tackle that can keep Kevin Kolb upright and while Martin is not Kalil, he is a good prospect in his own right.
  6. 4. St. Louis Rams - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
The Rams have needs all over. The offense has a ton of issues including the offensive line and the lack of receivers, but their defense is hurting as well. The Rams will probably go best player available and Morris Claiborne is a fantastic corner that would give them a play maker on the back end of the defense.
  7. 5. Carolina Panthers - Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
Cam Newton is performing better than anyone ever thought he would coming out of the gate, but here is the problem. Their leading receiver is a 32 year old Steve Smith, followed by two tight ends before they get to another receiver with his future ahead of them instead of behind them in Brandon LaFell. Blackmon is an absolute stud and would give Newton another guy who can go up and make plays on the ball.
  8. 6. Minnesota Vikings - Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis
This is not a good situation for the Vikings with the premier offensive tackles and the best receiver off the board. One of the biggest problems in the decline of the Vikings is the aging and loss of NG Pat Williams. For people who believe in the planet theory, meet Dontari Poe. A 350lb defensive tackle from Memphis who can plug the run but is not limited to just doing that and can get after the quarterback. Put on a line with Kevin Williams and Jared Allen, the Vikings can get right back to having the best run defense in the NFL.
  9. 7. Jacksonville Jaguars - Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
They have two nice young defensive tackles, but they have not been able to fill the need at defensive end for several years. Coples plays at the size of a defensive tackle, but has the ability to rush the quarterback as well. He is the prototypical power end.
  10. 8. Seattle Seahawks - Matt Barkley, QB, Southern California
When the Seahawks entered this season, it was understood that short of a miracle, they were going to be in need of a quarterback. Pete Carroll recruited Matt Barkley at USC and while he has not been afraid to pass over some of his players like Taylor Mays (good choice), Matt Barkley is everything he would like in a franchise quarterback.
  11. 9. Denver Broncos - Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
This pick is really going to depend on how much John Elway allows head coach John Fox to put his finger print on this team. The Broncos are currently seeing what they have in Tim Tebow with less than stunning results, but John Fox is by nature a coach that wants to run the football. If Elway wins out, they will probably go with a quarterback, but Fox wants the stud running back that could allow Tebow to do more with his legs and create more openings for him to throw. Fox wins out this time and the Broncos end up with the best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson.
  12. 10. Washington Redskins - Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma
It is pretty amazing the Redskins started out as well as they did considering they went into the season with Rex Grossman and John Beck as their quarterbacks. Sanity has taken hold in the NFL and the Redkins have crashed back to Earth. Shanahan needs to find his quarterback and Jones fits many of the characteristics Shanahan loved about Cutler and Elway. He is a big armed QB that can move.
  13. 11. Cleveland Browns - Vontaze Burfict, ILB, Arizona State
The Browns have one good linebacker to this point and could use more playmakers on defense. Tom Heckert's track record suggests he might not be inclined to go linebacker this early, but he has never had a linebacker of this caliber staring him in the face and he is building Dick Jauron's defense and Jauron's defense could certainly use a Brian Urlacher type of presence in the middle, kicking Jackson over to one of the outside backer spots, likely the Will.
  14. 12. Philadelphia Eagles - Manti Te'o, ILB, Notre Dame
If Philadelphia intends to continue running their wide 9 defensive scheme, they desperately need a beast in the middle to make plays for them. Te'o fits the mold and should be a plug and play type guy for the Eagles that are seeking the final pieces to a Super Bowl puzzle before their window of opportunity closes.
  15. 13. Dallas Cowboys - Janoris Jenkins, CB, North Alabama
The Cowboys desperately need a cornerback and Janoris Jenkins has proved against the best of the best, he is a fantastic cover corner. His off field issues with marijuana that have landed him at North Alabama will not scare off Jerry Jones and the Cowboys from addressing a huge need like they did with Dez Bryant.
  16. 14. Kansas City Chiefs - Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington
It appears as though Todd Haley could be on the way out, but since Scott Pioli brought in Matt Cassel, they may continue with him. Since the Chiefs have moved to the 3-4, they have basically had stop gap after stop gap manning the nose tackle position and while it is possible they continue with that trend, they have an opportunity to bring in their Vince Wilfork type presence unless they are happy with the progress at Jerrell Powe for the position. They could opt for Jerel Worthy if they want someone who might make more plays in the backfield, but Ta'amu is the more traditional nose tackle for their system and the Chiefs are notorious for going off of their own board regardless of how others rank their players.
  17. 15. Tennessee Titans - Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson
The Titans stay consistently competitive by having effective line play and since Jason Jones has moved outside, they currently have... Shaun Smith at one of the defensive tackle spots. Jurrell Casey has the ability to play the nose or 3 technique, but with Thompson, they can move Casey permanently to the nose guard spot and let Thompson wreak havoc at the 3-technique. However, if he were to declare, considering Mike Munchak's past, I would not rule out David DeCastro with this pick.
  18. 16. New York Jets - Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
While the Jets defense has been very effective and very talented, they have not had a pass rusher that could consistently pressure the quarterback without blitzing. Courtney Upshaw not only has the ability to rush the quarterback effectively, he can play the run pretty well, and has tons of experience in the 3-4 playing in Saban's system in Tuscaloosa.
  19. 17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska
The Bucs have a lot of young talent on defense, but Ronde Barber is still manning one of their corner spots and Aqib Talib is at the other, assuming he can stay out of trouble. Reports are that the Bucs love Dennard and this week against Michigan State, it was easy to see why as he had several big pass break ups deep down the field
  20. 18. Cleveland Browns - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
There are so many questions in regards to the Browns offense, but at this point, the Browns are sending out signals like everything is going to plan, so while they could look to improve that side of the ball, the holes on the defense are far more obvious. While Joe Haden is solidified at one corner, Sheldon Brown is abysmal on the other side. Kirkpatrick brings a rare blend of size and physical play that could end up having him as a tougher version of Antonio Cromartie if he has the hips to stay at this position in the pros. Kirkpatrick has an enormous test this week as the Tide plays LSU. If the Browns were to go this route, they go from having an enormous hole to possibly having a dominant pair of corners a la Frank Minnefield and Hanford Dixon
  21. 19. Cincinnati Bengals - Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
The Bengals have an effective defense, but no one that really makes an offensive coach nervous in the linebacking core and have an opportunity to really upgrade their middle linebacker position with a pure, tackling machine in Kuechly, who is just too good to pass up here.
  22. 20. Chicago Bears - Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
The Bears have neglected Jay Cutler to the extreme and Michael Floyd is just what the doctor ordered. A physical receiver with the ability to catch the ball and traffic and a nose for the endzone. The Bears could also use this pick to continue addressing their offensive line.
  23. 21. New Orleans Saints - Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina
As this pick currently falls, the Saints appear to be in a position where they can take the best player on their board and as far as their system is concerned, they could use a fast weak side linebacker that can make plays as a blitzer or in coverage and they have Martez Wilson in the pipeline for the strong side spot.
  24. 22. Houston Texans - Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Houston needs to add a more permanent solution to play the 1-tech nose guard in Wade Phillips' system. Jerel Worthy has the size to be a traditional 2-gap nose, but the quickness of a 1-gap player that can get upfield to make plays.
  25. 23. San Diego Chargers - Brandon Jenkins, DE, Florida State
The Chargers need to find someone else who can get after the quarterback since Larry English has been a flop short of a 2 sack game against Miami and Travis LaBoy is an average stop gap at the position. Jenkins is in the mold of the undersized speed rusher that Florida State is known.
  26. 24. New York Giants - David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
With no obvious pick here, this could be a good spot for a team that wants to move up for either Robert Griffin III or Ryan Tannehill. If he declares, DeCastro could be the rare caliber of guard of a Steve Hutchinson. Chris Snee has been a great guard on one side and DeCastro could step right in and play at left guard and help what has been an anemic running game for the Giants this year.
  27. 25. Cincinnati Bengals - Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
The Bengals are currently playing what amounts to a right tackle at left tackle and they need a pure pass blocker and Reiff would definitely give them that as well as allow them to move Whitworth inside to guard, where he would be a better fit. Using the pick they got from Oakland to get their quarterback, they would be wise to use this pick to help make sure Dalton stays upright so he can continue his development.
  28. 26. Baltimore Ravens - Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
Bryant McKinnie is a stop gap at best for the Ravens at left tackle. And by virtue of the fact that McKinnie is at left tackle and Oher stays at right tackle, the Ravens appear to be content with him over there, so the Ravens need to draft a left tackle that can come in and play sooner than later. Adams is in a similar mold as Ogden in terms of his size and Ozzie Newsome loves to collect talented 300lbers.
  29. 27. New England Patriots - Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
Assuming they actually use the pick, the New England Patriots seem to love the tweeners that other teams pass up and Mevlin Ingram is a classic tweener. He could conceivably contribute at defensive end, outside linebacker, or even defensive tackle depending on the situation and Bill Belichick is a guy who would take full advantage. Regardless of where he is put, Ingram has a knack for getting pressure on the quarterback and that is exactly what the Patriots need.
  30. 28. Buffalo Bills - Ronnell Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
The most pressing need for the Bills is linebacker and they could opt for the surging Ronnell Lewis, who has had 4 sacks in the past 4 games for the Sooners. The Bills could use at least 3 new starting linebackers in their 3-4, so it would not be a surprise to see them take several and Lewis could be the first of that crop.
  31. 29. Pittsburgh Steelers - Cordy Glenn, OG, Georgia
It would be wise for the Steelers to continue improving their offensive line, because Roethlisberger has been sacked 25 times so far this season. Cordy Glenn is playing out of position at left tackle because Georgia has been forced into that position, but Glenn is a premier guard who might also be able to play right tackle in the NFL and he is the mammoth type of linemen the Steelers love.
  32. 30. Detroit Lions - Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
The best thing the Lions could do is improve their offensive line to keep Stafford alive and run the football more effectively, but as there does not appear to be a lineman worth the value, they go completely the other way and give Matthew Stafford another weapon to throw the ball. Enter Alshon Jeffery, who has had a really mediocre junior season thus far, he is a 6'4" 230lb wide receiver who can make plays in traffic. And while this appears to be a throwback to the Matt Millen era, the Lions have shown they are not afraid to stack a few positions to give themselves what they hope is an unstoppable advantage with Calvin Johnson and Alshon Jeffery on the outside with Titus Young in the slot and Brandon Pettigrew at tight end.
  33. 31. San Francisco 49ers - Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska
The 49ers have a ton of options where they could improve the team in spite of their impressive start. One of those areas is the defensive line where the 49ers can not only get a versatile player, but someone that fits what Jim Harbaugh loves in a football player. A tough, hard working player that makes plays for his team. Whether it is as a 5 technique end, a 3 technique defensive tackle, or as a power end, Jared Crick is a good run defender who can also get after the quarterback.
  34. 32. Green Bay Packers - Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
If the Packers see a defensive lineman they like, that could be the pick, but the Packers defense is not playing quite at the level it was last year and part of that is the fact that their corners are not playing quite as well as they have been. Minnifield is the guy with a nice combination of size and speed and is basically pretty good at everything.
  35. Before people take to ripping this apart, I am not real happy with the Titans pick. Wide receiver would make a ton of sense there, but I am not convinced they would pull the trigger, so it is what it is. It is a similar story with the Buffalo Bills... they desperately need a linebacker, but picking one out of the bunch is difficult right there. The position is right... the player? Eh.

    Lol @ Detroit...

I didn't know Mat Millen was back with the organization...

I think they would probably go for the next available CB (which apparently is Chase Minnifield), either that or DE as VandenBosch will be getting up there in age...

It's too early for mock drafts lol...

Ugh... getting a NT out of this terrible season would be the worst case scenario for a Vikings draft. It's a need... kind of but with so many other holes I'd be very disappointed if all 5 of the guys you listed before Poe were off the board.
  3. Thedeprivedwriter -
Also (and this is just nitpicking on my part), there wouldn't be two NFC teams having the last two picks...it would go by post season results...which is why mock drafts are just silly this time of year
  4. Peter Smith -
Draft order is based purely on the numbers, since there is no real good way to do it.

As for the Lions, did they really need Nick Fairley last year? They really have not drafted too much on need thus far under Martin Mayhew. It has mostly been a BPA type set up and while receiver seems very unlikely, he could be the best player on the board there and be the pick as a result. Minnifield makes sense though if they want to address a need if none of the linemen are there.

That's all fine...but based on the draft order...I don't think they'd go WR.

Similar to what Sascha believes, I think the top 15 picks should be made on impact players, and the rest for need...Detroit while they didn't really need Nick Fairley picked the BPA because they were 13th? I can't remember off hand. I know they were up in the top 15 or so...at 29th, I don't think they would pick a WR just because he's the best player available...This is shown by the picking Jahvid Best, Brandon Pettigrew (both were needs at the time, arguably). Based on the WR play this season for the Lions, they wont need a 3rd slot reciever

Did they need a tight end? Michael Oher was sitting right there at the time when they picked Pettigrew and it seemed like a done deal to get the franchise left tackle to go with the franchise quarterback. When they traded up for Best, I thought they were actually making the move for Roger Saffold at the time. Maybe running back was a need as well, but Best was not an every down back even coming out of Cal.

Jeffery is definitely thinking outside the box, but Mayhew has shown a tendency to do just that. Plus, when it happens, I can elude to the fact that at some point in time, I had this combination and therefore I was right like certain draftniks that shall remain nameless will do on TV.

Yes. They didn't have a pass catching tight end who was a play-maker like Pettigrew has become. A lot of people weren't high on the pick but I was when I watched it unfold. He's a franchise type TE who can also block when he needs to.

RB was a need, not as high as some others but it was a need as they really only had Kevin Smith at the time and I believe they were going to try to implement a 2-back system and needed a Chris Johnson like play-maker out of the backfield.

Lol...and so you can get a cookie for being right about something?

Absolutely. It really is a worst case scenario, but hey... you get a 6'5" 350lb goliath.

I disagree heavily with Alshon Jeffery slipping as far as he does in this. I don't have a problem with Blackmon passing him up at this point, but a guy like that isn't slipping past receiver needy teams such as Jacksonville, Arizona, even potentially Indy at 2 or Cleveland at 11.

I have huge questions with Alshon Jeffery at this point. His production has fallen off a cliff compared to last year. The guy who many (myself included) felt would be the #2 receiver this year behind Justin Blackmon is tied for 92nd in receiving yards right now. He has had problems gaining separation, which could indicate a lack of speed, route running, or both. He really needs to come out and play like a dominant player. The first round at this point is based on his enormous physical ability, but to me, he is possibly the most overrated prospect in the draft right now. When did Blackmon pass him? He was always ahead of him in my book... I would have had him ahead of Julio Jones last year.

Indianapolis at 2 is flat out insane right now for Jeffery
Jacksonville could take him, but that seems a little early right now.
As for Cleveland, the argument can absolutely be made that they need a receiver, but Jeffery does not look a west coast receiver to me. They are currently neglecting a guy who creates mismatches in Evan Moore. Jeffery seems unlikely.

While neither Ryan Tannehill nor Robert Griffin III are listed in this mock, I expect one if not both of them to be selected in round 1 by teams trading back into the 1st round to get a quarterback.
