  • College Coaching Carousel Spins

It was a busy day on the college head coach circuit, with a number of top jobs being filled by interesting hires.

The big news of the day came early as Mike Gundy...stayed put at Oklahoma State. That was only the beginning.

Bret Bielema, he of several disparaging statements about the SEC last year, was the newest head coach in the SEC for a few minutes earlier today. Bielema will be the long-sought replacement for Bobby Petrino at Arkansas and will be leading cheers of woo pig sooie for at least a few seasons. I'll pass on the obvious jokes about Bielema's oversized waistband here, and instead, I'll just go with this: we'll miss beating you every year in the Big Ten Bret, enjoy being the head of the 9th best program in the SEC.

Then a few minutes later, news broke that Auburn will be bringing back Gus Malzahn to replace his former boss, Gene Chizik. Malzahn, as you'll remember, parlayed his three years as Tigers offensive coordinator into a head coaching gig at Arkansas State last December 13th. Less than a year later, he's back as head coach. Go figure. Honestly, I love this hire for the sheer fact that Auburn will be tolerable on offense again.

Finally, just a few minutes ago, meetings began at Boston College and Temple University to inform both teams that Steve Addazio, the former Florida offensive coordinator and, until hours ago, head coach at Temple, has accepted the same position at Boston College, replacing Frank Spaziani, who himself replaced Tom O'Brien, who left to become the head coach at North Carolina State and was recently himself fired and replaced by Dave Doeren, formerly of BCS bound Northern Illinois.

    Have I lost anyone yet?

So the logical next stops on the carousel? How about Tennessee, which could name Charlie Strong its next sideline boss, or not, or Mike Gundy.

In other words, keep the smartphone handy, this one could go a while.
