It's Draft Time!
T-minus 28 hours and counting until the start of the NFL Draft and tension couldn't be thicker. Many trades are in the works and big moves are expected? Will the 49ers pull the trigger and grab Smith? Who will be the unfortunete team to draft Braylon Edwards? Are the Redskins going to doom their franchise further and draft a QB in the first round? Who will the Jags draft? And finally the most important question of all, who will be Mr. Irrelevant? I will try to answer those questions and many more.
Jacksonville's Mock
Since I don't feel like doing a complete mock, I'll just do a mock of Jacksonville's picks:
Round 1(21): Justin Miller, CB, Clemson: I favor Fabian Washington more, but I think the front office will go with the sure thing. Miller will be solid lining up opposite of Rashean Mathis. I just hope we don't draft a WR here, give Reggie Williams some more time.
Round 2(52): Kailif Barnes, OT, Washigton: I really think Barnes has a good chance of sliding to Jacksonville in the second round. He would be solid if he had to start for Pearson or back Pearson up if he is fully healed from his knee injury. This may be considered a longshot, but anything can happen in the draft.
Round 3(87): Roscoe Parrish, WR, Miami: This would be the perfect time to nab a WR and Parrish would be the perfect WR to get at this time. Would compete with Williams, Wilford, Cortez Hankton, and Troy Edwards for spots 2-4 behind Smith.
Round 4(123): Brandon Jacobs, RB/FB, Southern Illinois: Once a member of Auburn's "Four Horseman," Jacobs transfered to Southern Illinois for more playing time. There are rumblings that Jacksonville should draft a speedy RB, but I think Jacobs would be a great addition. This may be considered a reach, but it would be a solid pickup. Has the potential to be a Jerome Bettis-esque RB.
Round 5(157): Jovan Haye, DE, Vanderbilt: This would be a solid pickup in the 5th round. Haye has been projected to go anywhere from the 2nd round to the 6th round. I'm hoping that he falls and we are able to snatch him up. I never saw much of Haye in Vandy, but I have heard good things about him.
Round 6(194): Mitch Meeuwsen, FS, Oregon State: With this most likely Donnovin Darius' last season in Jacksonville and Deke Cooper starting in 2006, Meeuwsen will be drafted for depth. Jacksonville has had luck getting safeties in the later rounds. Our best example is Marlon McCree.
Round 7(237): Billy Bajema, TE, Oklahoma State: There is talk that Jacksonville needs a TE and this will probably be the best choice in the 7th round. This is a pick for depth and he will probably end up on the practice squad. He has heart and I always admire that.
Good Call of the Week
This goes to Jacksonville's Front office for signing Marcus Stroud and David Garrard to long term extensions. With Stroud locked up, our next foucus will be John Henderson next year. With Garrard's extension, we have depth at QB and won't have to worry if Byron goes down again.
More Draft "Diamonds in the Rough"
Here are more of who I think will shine after being picked later in the draft.
Roscoe Parrish, WR, Miami(Florida)- Parrish has become the forgotten WR in this draft. He is still projected to be taken in the second or third round, but there is just no buzz. There are questions about his durability and size, but he could be the next great return man in the league. An excellent burner.
Wesley Britt, OT, Alabama- One word, heart. That descibes Britt better than this analysis. Britt has the size(6'8'', 314 lbs), but he does need to bulk up. He does have great durability and will play through injuries. If he ever develops a mean streak, watch out, he will be a perennial Pro Bowler. Questions about his broken leg from his Junior season dropped him, but he has been moving up on a lot of teams boards.
Richie Incognito, C, Nebraska- Incognito is easily one of the best run blockers in the draft and has a real mean streak, but his temper easily gets the better of him. Multiple team violation got him suspended for the season and hurt his draft status. He enrolled in Oregon last fall, but decided to go pro after he found out he couldn't play until 2005. Incognito had a monster combine, but he injured his knee and missed the rest of the combine. If a team can look past that injury and his off the field problems, he too could be come a perennial Pro Bowler.
My rant of the week
My rant of the week is at the Washington Redskins and their potential drafting of a QB in round one. First off, what is wrong with Ramsey? He was really starting to play very well at the end of the season. Dan Snider traded to get him a few years ago and now he would be kicking him to the curb if they draft a QB with the 25th overall pick. If they do draft a QB, it will most likely be Jason Campbell. Campbell had a great senior season, but Pat Ramsey is clearly better. There is no doubt in my mind that the Redskins should go with a defensive lineman with that pick. If they want to get better, they'll draft a defensive lineman, if they want to continue to wallow in mediocrity, they'll draft a QB.
My non-football thought of the week
Today is my high school's prom. The biggest event of the school year besides the graduation and every junior and senior are excited, except me. The prom has to be the biggest waste of money in school. You rent(or buy) and overpriced tux(or dress), you spend a load of cash on a limo(or a stretch Hummer if you really want to blow money, spend way too much on a crappy dinner, you go to some idiotic building for 15 minutes just to say, "I was there," and you do all of that just to get some. Wow, what a complete waste. Here's a message to all of the younger members of PSH, don't go to the prom. Take your girlfriend(or boyfriend) or a group of friends and go bowling or see a movie or something like that. You have much more fun and you don't spend nearly the amount you would going to prom. I hope I have helped anybody with this decision.
Coming next Friday
-I analyze Jacksonville's draft
-I anyalze the steals and reaches of the draft
-I rant on who I think had the worst draft
-Another memorable non-football thought of the week
That's it for now, go home and get ready for the draft.
