Hawaii Warriors
Georgia Bulldogs Louisiana Superdome: New Orleans, Louisiana January 1st, 2008; 8:30 P.M. E.T.
TEAM BACKGROUNDHawaii may be the only undefeated team left in the Nation, but it certainly wasn't an easy path. After a magical season for Boise State in which they not only went to a BCS Bowl, but won it, Hawaii had high hopes of doing the same this year. Their main competition, Boise State lost a lot pieces, so the WAC Title and the chance to run the table was there for the taking. The first scare for the Warriors was in Week 2 against Louisiana State. Hawaii tied the game late with a field goal to send it into overtime. After a Colt Brennan to Jason Rivers touchdown, Louisiana State scored and went for the win with a 2 point conversion. Hawaii held and their season would live on. Hawaii would have a few more scares, beating both Fresno and San Jose State by 7. Hawaii Kicker saved the season late against Nevada when he hit a 45 yard field goal with 11 seconds left to give the Warriors a 2 point win. After they set down Boise State in convincing fashion, the only test was Washington. Washington scored 3 times in the first quarter, making it look real bleak for Hawaii. But they didn't quit, and Colt Brennan hit Ryan Grice-Mullen with 44 seconds left to break the tie and give Hawaii it's undefeated regular season.
Hawaii is built off the attack of it's Run and Shoot offense. Head Coach June Jones' offense is famous for putting up numbers, but with a Quarterback the caliber of Colt Brennan, the numbers have inflated into things no one has ever seen before. What is widely unknown though is that Hawaii has three very talented receivers that are very underrated. Davone Bess might be the best Receiver in the Nation that you've never heard of. Jason Rivers the speed demon is the third wheel but he leads the team in touchdown catches. The best receiver statistically this year though is Ryan Grice-Mullen. The scary part? Rivers is the only Senior of the bunch.
You have to wonder how it will be for Hawaii's fan base traveling to a southern stadium. A team that is so used to staying home and playing in the Hawaii Bowl, will now have to go South into territory where it will no doubt be dominated by Georgia's fans. It's not over for Hawaii though. They have one more game to play. In what will be the most important game in their entire history, they have to play a team that is considered the hottest team in the nation. It's a tough task for the loved team from Honolulu, but after Boise State's improbable comeback one year ago, anything is possible. -- Wolverine
TEAM BACKGROUND Some may say Hawaii had a cakewalk schedule, which is why they are in the Sugar Bowl. That claim cannot be made for the Bulldogs though. Among the out of conference games scheduled, a Big 12 opponent in Oklahoma State, and an ACC opponent in Georgia Tech, plus road games at Alabama and Tennessee to go with the Cocktail party in Jacksonville. The team passed most of their tests with flying colors, with the glaring exception of the Tennessee game, a 35-14 loss. Since that game, Georgia has reeled off 6 straight wins, and has a case to be the best team in the SEC. But, the loss also kept them out of the SEC championship game, a matchup with LSU, and a shot at the national title. Instead, Georgia will have to settle for a Sugar Bowl matchup with Hawaii, as they will attempt not to succumb to a WAC school the way Oklahoma did a year ago.
Offensively, the Bulldogs are led by sophomore QB Matt Stafford, who passed for 2348 yards and 18 TD’s over the season, but only completed 55% of his passes, while throwing 9 interceptions. Redshirt freshman Knowshon Moreno is a talented back who gained 1273 yards on the ground this season, and he was complemented by the senior Thomas Brown, who adds 706 more. Most of the receiving was done by senior receiver Sean Bailey and junior Mohamed Massaquoi, who combined for 1034 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Defensively, Georgia was 19th in the nation, giving up just under 325 yards per game. They were led by Junior Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, who led the ‘Dawgs with 85 tackles, including 11 for loss and 4.5 sacks. Senior safety Kelin Johnson grabbed 4 interceptions, while senior end Marcus Howard and sophomore DT Geno Atkins combined for 14 sacks.
The Dawgs are coached by 6th year head man Mark Right, who came from Florida State in 2001. His Georgia team has won 2 SEC championships and three division titles, while tying for a 4th. He has a 71-19 record as head coach, good for the 4th best winning percentage among active coaches, before this season. Richt should be around for many epic battles against some of the SEC’s best, like Alabama’s Nick Saban and Florida’s Urban Meyer.-- ruuuuudiii
Colt Brennan (QB)Who else but the Hawaii Heisman Candidate? It's his time to shine on the big stage. Colt came back to contend for a Heisman, and that he did. But last year's season couldn't be topped. He broke the single season touchdown record, and captured the attention of a lot of people. For all the wrong reasons though. Colt is considered a system Quarterback putting up video game numbers, and would be nothing more. But Colt has his chance to prove them all wrong against a real SEC defense. It's been a long journey for Colt, leaving Colorado, going through issues off the field. But he has found himself a family in Hawaii and will be looking to end his career on a high note. This is a big game for his NFL Stock, and could mean the validation of scouts that he can play football. Hawaii's all time touchdown leader has missed time this year but completed 71.4% of his passes, which is outstanding considering how many times he throws the ball. His interceptions have been up a little from last year, but in addition to 8 rushing scores, Brennan has thrown 38 touchdowns. Colt is going to have to throw early and throw often(it's not like he's not used to it), and try and beat this Georgia defense. He can't play defense, and Georgia is certainly going to score on the Hawaii defense, so it's up to Colt to keep his team in the game.

Knowshon Moreno (RB) Moreno won the SEC freshman of the year award, and was named to many freshmen All-America teams, as he led the Bulldogs offense on the ground. Moreno short career is highlighted by a 196 yard effort against Troy as well as 205 total yards against Florida, scoring three touchdowns in each game. First Bulldog since Herschel Walker to rush for 100 yards in 5 consecutive games. Without Moreno, Georgia’s offense would likely have stuttered to another loss or two. -- ruuuuudiii
Hawaii Receivers vs. Georgia Secondary Hawaii possesses the 3rd best offense in the country, and the 2nd best passing offense, racking up 450 yards per game through the air. Meanwhile Georgia’s pass defense allows a very stingy 205 yards per contest, good for 24th in the country. Containing Colt Brennan and his trio of 1000 yard receivers is of top concern for Georgia. It will be a very tall task for the Bulldogs, are they up to the challenge? -- ruuuuudiii Predictions
Ruuuuudiii: I think Moreno and the Georgia defense will make the difference in this game, and Hawaii won’t be able to repeat the feat Boise State pulled off last week. Hawaii will make it very exciting though, but the ‘Dawgs pull this one out 34-31.
